just got to work it. Rock it back and forth till you get a little bit of a gap stick in a puddy knife or something simular work your way up to fitting a flathead in there... pry push wiggle... its a bitch but it will come. Make sure that you have all the bolts out and pb blaster helps too as the pins can get a little rusty with age

i had the engine and trans out of the car before i tried to seporate the two, used a chain around the seam and had a fat guy sit on the tranny while i leaned on the bad engine.

you can remove it without removing the torque converter, but here are the reasons you should remove the torque converter boltsfirst:
1. you will damage the flexplate if you don't
2. you will damage the trasmission output shaft seals if you dont
3. you will damage the transmission output shaft if you dont
4. you will damage the interlocking mechanism on the torque converter if you dont
5. finally, the torque converter is attached to the transmission pump shaft via a spring cir-clip.

so, are you planning on reusiing any of the parts above, including the TC or the flexplate?

to remove the TC 4 bolts, there is an access cover on the top of the engine, passenger side. sometimes it will have a black ABS cover over the access hole, but most often that cover is missing.

thanks heaps for that,

i am going to take the tc bolts off as i have located that space to do it.
i was lucky enough to have purchased a cheap wrek with mint engine ( now in the RS ) and trans ( 135k on the dial ) so am gona use this but,

i dont remember how i seperated that trans which is sitting on the bench but i do remember that when the engine came out the TC was on the engine.
my Q now is,
is that TC buggard? have i damaged the trans going off what you just descibed? and can i take the TC off the trans coming out ans use it?

once again , your help is greatfully appreciated.

As for damage, everything is probably re-useable,
except the TC Cir-Clip, the pump shaft o-ring, and you probably cracked the driveplate-the driveplate is about 33 dollars new from Subaru. You will have to remove the drive plate from the engine and inspect it very very very thoruoghly for any hairline cracks, and it would be a good idea to replace it anyway, to prevent another teardown.

hey fellas,

i have nt done too much work on the car(weather you know) but i did manage to put replacement engine in.
my Q is,
after bolting TC back on and bolting on trans,it seems that the TC is almost unmoveable (turning that is).
could it be that i have not put the TC back on properly and its jammin?should you be able to turn the TC at all?

Are you trying to turn it with the shifter in Neutral? it should turn when in neutral, but remember, it is bolted to the crankshaft, so you are also turning the engine with it, so it will have resistance. Definitely wont spin easliy.
