'94 EJ22 swapped for '90 - Idle and A/C Bracket

I'm just finishing putting a '94 EJ22 into my '90 Legacy. I'm almost finished except for two sticking points:

First, the new engine starts and runs fine. But I found that it simply wouldn't idle. If I take my foot off the gas the engine dies as if it's not even trying to idle.

I found that if I unplug the connector to the IAC valve the engine will idle on its own. Plugging it back in brings the problem right back. I also noticed (and had it confirmed by a search here) that the IAC valve changed from 2 to 3 terminals between the two engines.

So what can I do about this? My guess is that the '90 ECM can't deal with the '94 IAC configuration. If that's the case, then it seems logical that the solution is to replace the '90 ECM with a '94. Is this correct? Is there a better solution?

The other problem is that Subaru switched to a two piece A/C compressor bracket for '93. The new (used) engine came with the large main bracket, but not the small one. I've been trying to find the small secondary bracket, but so far, all the "1994" brackets I've found don't fit because they're about 1.75 inches too long when measured from the compressor side to the anchor bolt.

There is a possibility that this engine actually came from a '93. Where the brackets that different between the '93 and '94? Should I be looking for a '93 bracket instead of one from a '94? Can you point me to pictures of the actual '93 and '94 A/C brackets?

SWAP! the iac. Best solution ever. Cause then you basically are stock.

IF! the old IAC does not work because the mounting area of the new manifold is different enough, you can take a piece of 3/16th aluminium and use it as a spacer. Cut out the aluminium to match the gasket. It will cure you ills. 100% satisfaction.

Not quite stock, Doug -- the injectors would still be different. (Unless you swapped rails, Ed?)

I think you should swap your entire 1990 intake manifold over, Ed.

Or swap the ECU and MAF sensor -- Appropriate ECU donors include any 92 non-turbo model and 93-94 manual non-turbo models. MAF donors include 90-91 automatic non-turbos and all 92-94 non-turbos.

I swapped the IAC valve over. It seems to be running beautifully.

Is there any particular reason to swap over the whole intake manifold other than making things "more stock"? I did have to take the wiring harness from the '90.

Thanks for the quick answers! It was great to find someone with the exact answers I needed!

I didn't think the 90 IAC valve would fit the 94 intake manifold unless you made some kind of adapter.

Having the correct injectors will help economy and driveability.

You can just swap fuel rails instead of swapping the entire manifold, though.

If it runs fine and dandy now, I don't see any reason to swap manifolds. Does the new one have the wierd EGT(? or whatever it is called) valve thing a ma jig? Located on the driver side on the manifold?

Are the 94 injectors bigger? Or just different?

Just different.

What weird EGT valve thing a ma jig are you talking about? You mean EGR? Cuz that wasn't introduced on Legacies until 95.

EGR, yeah, thats it.... I have a manifold or two I have picked up that have them, just didnt know when they started.
