FMICIFIED!!!!

Well, after some friendly time with the torch, and the grinder, I got the bumper beam trimmed to fit.

Once I trimmed it, I noticed I took off a bit too much, so I may actually pull the bumper beam off of my 91 parts car, and re-work it. For now....

And with the bumper slid on, checking for clearance...

And yes, the intercooler IS there....

I didn't know it could be so stealth!

Cellphone, with crazy back-lighting from the garage door being open, and a dirty lens.

The pics are much better when the lens is a bit cleaner, like this: http://www.thawa.net/bac52/Wheels/OutbackWheel.jpg

Damn, Phil, that is really stealth! When you get sunlight lighting your bumper from above, the intercooler won't just be subtle, it will be like impossible to see even if you point it out to people.

BTW - Dunno if you heard around the shop, but something in my driveline sounded horrible when I got back from the shop this morning. Arg!

Lol, sounds like your taking the RS to North Carolina.

I hate your car, Sam. Only because when I see it, I miss my Version4 seat SO much. You have NO idea how much I miss that seat. Most comfy seat ever!

Wow, that's awesome Phil!

But dude, get a digital camera. Those pics look like nasty, stinky ass.

I'm really happy for you and at the same time insanely jealous. You just make me so damn emotional anymore... *weep, weep*

:)

That's the coolest FMIC I've never seen.

There are some good cameraphones, then there's whatever he's using. Looks stealthy though, I dig it.

I'm using my Motorola E815. It needs a warranty replacement though, so the new one will be better. This one's lens is so scratched and dirty and fubar, i'm surprised the pics turned out that good.

Umm... sleeper... :), nice work Phil. When's the dyno going to happen.

And btw, I like your dogbox too.

Any chance of doing a full writeup of this, incl. part #s and sources?

It looks ideal.

I think that the kit I have requires to much modification for a full writeup to be beneficial.

But it's a TurboXS FMIC kit for a GD impreza. I cut the bumper beam as shown, and the core sits neatly on the shelf below the AC condenser. I'll likely remove the AC condenser so that I can mount a set of fans to help improve air flow. The entire bumper opening is filled with intercooler, so that air only reaches the radiator after passing through a 3.75" thick intercooler core. The grille, however, feeds direct to the radiator.

man, you really did cut the hell out of the bumper beam. should be some good weight savings at least. a few people run without a bumper beam.
is that black paint going to screw up the heat exchanging properties of the aluminum at all? seems like it might cool better as bare aluminum, but at least it will be very stealth black. good job.

I doubt it'll matter. Black radiates heat more efficiently than silver does, so it does have that going for it.

Will the paint insulate the intercooler? Maybe, but radiators are often black, and the paint I used said it was good for radiators and cooling systems.

In the real world, I doubt it'll make a difference. Not to mention that there is SO much thermal mass with this core, that the painted surface is barely anything compared to all of the exposed surfaces. The back is still silver.

two words... bad ass...

i love it, thats exactally what ive been thinking to do with my FMIC when i get it, but it will probally be a smaller spearco just simply because im gonna end up with a td05 16g from deadbolt and only run like 15psi...

anyways, sorry for the hyjack, again awsome job.

+1 for awesome stealthyness! But that bumper beam looks pretty flimsy now.

Is your battery tie down made from an erector set?

that's not a battery!~

that's Phil's coolant tank!

first part of a modded legacy I'd ever seen

(2004 East Coast Subaru Shootout, when we stopped after Phil got some O2 sensor or something wet)

Is the piping done yet?

Posted: Sat Mar 25, 2006 9:31 pm
by BAC5.2
No, can't do the piping until the tranny is in. I have a few ideas.

I was playing with it the other day, and I have a good idea of what to do. Just need to re-work the intake a bit. I might try a blow-through maf.

I am switching to blow through MAF.

I will be putting it where the circle is. I just have to get an tubing adapter or two...
