So I just went in to get new tires for my 91 Legacy wagon. I selected the Continential ContiExtreme Contct in a 205/55 R16. I have a set of WRX wheels with Bridgestone Potenza RE92s. The RE92 have worked fine, but the Continental tire did not fit. They rubbed against the strut spring perches along the inside edge of the tire. Only in the rear. The fronts fit fine. I was really suprised to see how much wider they were! They are supposed to be the same size tire!


Do not buy this tire it will not fit.

Has anyone used the Pirelli P-Zero Nero? I need to know what tire to replace the RE92 with and quick because my tires are unsafe.

I do not want to use the RE92 again. It is a crappy ass tire.

Also, will changing my struts to the KYB-GR2 give me any more clearance? I belive that my current struts are stock

I got the Falken ZE-512 in the 205/50VR-16. They fit fine. Still closer than the Bridgestone RE92, but it works

I'm starting to think that it's only the N/A's that have rubbing trouble.

I don't know a single person with an SS or TW that rubs with a 205/55/16.

I wasn't even CLOSE to rubbing with 205/55/16's on WRX wheels.

Hm. I rubbed with WRX wheels with 205/55R16 RE92s when cornering really hard or jumping curbs, and that was a Sport Sedan.

But, yeah, we discussed this before... I think it was ciper who said that turbo rear rotors effectively decrease the offset of the rear wheels as compared to non-turbos, which would make NAs more likely to rub.

I never rubbed. But then again, your rear springs were hella shot. Your stock rear springs next to my stock rear springs, and yours were definately shorter.

I'm rubbing a little bit in the front when I turn all the way to the right. I'm also running a set of 205/55/16 Perelli Winter Carving tires on 16x7.5 wheels, at about 1-1.25" lower than stock. It never happened with 205/50's.

I'm not too worried.

I rubbed in the rear with the WRX wheels and tires, but that was with STi suspension. The slight positive camber in the rear caused a bit of rubbing, but I didn't even know until I looked closely at the sidewalls. There was a bit of contact at high amounts of bump on the sides of the rear tires. Now that I have -1.5 degrees it's not close to the strut or the fender, and I can always roll the fender.

I don't see how turbo rear rotors could change your offset compared to n/a rear rotors. The thickness of the rotor where it mounts to the hub is the same.

Yeah, I dunno. I'm just saying what I remember ciper saying. I've never compared the hats of turbo rear rotors to the hats of non-turbo rear rotors.

90-91 have longer springs and lower mounted spring seats than 92-94. Swapping to the later style will solve your rubbing problems.

I can vouch for that. BigO brand tires rubbed the stock rear struts on my '91 L in a 205-55, but the RE92s in the same size didn't. So I dropped to 205-50 Falkens with no problems. Since I swapped to AGXs ('92-'94 Leg, '93-'01 Impreza) and '99 RS coils, I'm comfortably running '05 GT 17s with the stock 215-45/17 RE92s.
