Metalic Substrate Cats

So I'm looking at these cats and from what I've read, they are the high flow cats to get.

I called up Random based on what I'd read from one of Dave's posts, and the cat was going to be $375!!!

Is that what I should expect?

Yep.

Are you looking to keep the cat on full time? Or will you just be using it when you need to get inspected by the man?

If it's the latter, any cat will work just as well as any other cat for that purpose.

If it's the first, then expect to pay around 350 to 400 bucks for a good high flow cat.

Yikes, I had no idea they were that much. Oh well.

So I may have to go with a cheapy for a little bit.

I called up Random again and got the dimensions, and it turns out that particular cat won't fit anyway. The closest 3" cat that they had that might fit was about 17" long. The guys at MSR measured our test pipes to being 16 9/32" long, so even that 17 might be a bit too long. I'll have to measure it when I get home.

Also, can I just go to any exhaust shop and ask them to make me a high flow cat to the dimensions of the test pipe if I bring it in as a reference?

If it works it won't be cheap. Platinum and rhodium seldom are.

Well I found a shop that can get me 3" metal cat for $218. So hopefully it's an ok Cat, but if what you guys are quoting me is correct, then maybe it isn't the best. I guess I can run catless again after I smog it, but I always feel sorry for the guys behind me breathing my fumes.

the right tune can correct the majority of that.

Well I currently don't have any EMS. So a tune is minimally possible. One day, I'll be able to do that.

its that easy... just take it to a shop and have them make it fit, its their job, and an easy one at that.

I got the Cat done today, it took the exaust shop 3 days to get it done (somewhat long story that kinda aggrivates me but I kinda understand).

Anyways, the welder feels bad and is going to hook me up with a cheap or free smog check and redo some welds on the cat.

On top of that I found out that the cat, even though it is only 7/32" shorter than my test pipe, is too short. When I tighten up all the bolts it pulls the mid pipe enough that the midpipe has to raise up some. This causes it to rub on the driveline.

Man oh Man did I miss my car. I had no idea. Driving it tonight brought nothing but smiles.
