hi all, ive got a 94 legacy 5spd manual non-turbo

is it bad for a clutch cable to be loose? ive got about 2.5 - 3.0" play.

ive got a whining sound coming from my tranny or clutch, when i push the clutch in it stops oveusly.

we lifted the car on a rotory lift and ran the motor pushing in and out the clutch. my auto teacher thinks it might be a throwout bearing goin out. so new clutch i guess

now when im driving around and shifting fast i almost always miss 3d gear. it feels like im alway catching on a gear row er somthing.
its not cause i release the clutch too soon even when i have the clutch in it can be a pain to get in to third.
i bought the car and it has hitch on it so i prasume he pulled a traller, wore out tranny?

i know random questions!

what should i do to fix this? help! :(

i had almost the same problem. the noise from the clutch, and i miss 3rd on tryin to quick shift sometimes. what i did was loosen up the cable that was on top of the tranny just a little bit. it seems to have less play and grabs way earlier than how i had it before.

New throwout bearing != new clutch.

My throwout bearing is unevenly worn. I took it to a mechanic and said it would be $50 to replace the throwout bearing, or if the throwout bearing does something to the clutch, $300 for the whole clutch. However, he said that I could drive it for a while and see if it gets worse. That was in January and I've put on 6000 miles since then; it hasn't gotten worse.

Whining sound or squeaking/squealing sound? I have a squeak when the clutch is partially depressed, and a clicking when I don't push it in at all.

Have you tried adjusting the clutch? It's really easy -- two bolts on a threaded rod in the middle-back of the engine bay.

3rd-gear grinding when you're shifting fast is normal, I think. It happens to me a lot. Phil (BAC5.2) had a lot of problems with gear grinding, and stiffer shifter bushings fixed it. Or you could just shift more slowly.

for me it sounds like a rotating sound sort of like... i serously dont know how to describe sounds. but i know it sounds like its rotating. im not too worried though. im going to find an impreza to put that motor into, and ill fix all the lil quirks that it has left. ill be usin my 2.2 bottom end again too. mine seems to have been doin it since the motor swap which is like... a year ago?? so it hasnt gotten worse. it has stayed the same. so im not too worried.

EDIT: 50 dollars to fix the throwout bearing? wouldnt you have to unbolt the motor from the tranny to get to that?
