So I've read up on doing a homemade CAI intake. Some people say that this would bring turbulent air past the MAF and possible cause damage. So has anyone done an CAI intake by removing snorkus and running pipe into fender with a cone filter on the end. If so, did you have any MAF problems? I know I won't get alot of hp gains but the airbox is fugly and I would like to replace it with polished piping My Leg is a 91 turbo.

I wouldn't personally recommend it....but if you want to do it....it's your car.

how can that be any different than running a blow thru setup? im sure the blow thru setup would be MORE likely to mess up the MAF, although ppl have alrdy done that and seems to work fine.

My car is running that way right now. I'd stay away from it because the filter tends to pick up a lot of stuff from the road and it sucks when it rains

I have been running a cone filter DIRECTLY attached to the MAF ever since I installed the supercharger two years ago. I have never had a MAF fail, but I do get CELs that come and go. Usually after awhile they dissappear for the rest of the drive, but some days they just randomly come and go.

^^^ I got CEL randomly aswell. It started when I blew a heater hose and all the coolant drained from my car and overheated. Now it comes on once and awhile.


I would like to do the CAI setup but I'm worried about cooking my MAF sensor which is big $$$. I'm pretty sure I'll be ok but I wanted to double check. As far as moisture and road debris , I'll stick a K&N mesh hydroshield over the filter to protect it from the elements. I think I will put the filter as high in fenderwell as possible to keep it away from the road.
Anyone else with this setup want to give their 2 cents.

You can't really use Doug's car as a guide; his engine and engine management are now very different from yours.

Your "random" CELs are probably due to a bad connection at a sensor. It's not uncommon for a coolant leak to damage the knock sensor's connection to the engine, or to even cook the sensor, for example.

You're unlikely to actually damage the sensor if you make sure the intake is mounted firmly but with bushings that allow a little movement, and that there's a little bit of play in the plumbing. The reason Josh is advising against the intake is not because of potential damage to the sensor but just because he (like others) found his car didn't run as well with a modified intake.

If all you're after is underhood looks, maybe you'd consider painting the airbox or something?

^^ Thats why I'm hesitant on doing this I do't want my car to run like crap either.
