The glory that is flat...

...Shifting.

I decided that today, instead of my bi-weekly routine of riding the bike to my 11am class, that I'd take the Legacy for a little road testing.

It's legal enough since I kinda put the bumper on.

I've probably put a hundred miles on the Dogbox since I got it, so I am still getting used to it, but I wanted to get a video so you guys could see what a manual transmission is capable of. Plus, I thought it would be cool.

So, I've been building my confidence in the tranny and in my arms and legs, and felt confident enough to do a WOT, clutchless, shift.

I got, on video, my first attempt.

What an amazing device, the DogBox. It was almost seemless acceleration. Like an automatic, only cooler sounding and not as shitty. When I let off the gas to shift, gauge bottomed to vacuum and when I was back on it, it was right back to 10psi. Not even a pause. Just a continual forward surge with a short breath in between the shift.

When I was done, I was in awe at what had happened. Almost unbelievable.

Sorry about the video quality. Cellphone video with my phone on the passenger seat proped against a soda bottle and my backpack.

Gives a good idea of the noise associated with a dog box too...

Without anything further...

Enjoy. Respect Hardy and please Save-As.

They're all trying to figure out to express the coolness that is shifting with a dogbox.

Yeah, that's like my hillclimb video. Lots of views and hardly any comments.

At least I responded to yours. ;)

Yes, I am quite envious...

We may be contacting you guys in the not-too-distant future to get a dogbox built for one of the NW Boxerwerks Rally Cars... :o

Car in general is pretty loud. The gears are fairly quiet. This dogbox is actually not as noisy as the straight cut synchro box I had.

But this gearset has a helical second. Inside the car, it's pretty sleeper (though 3rd screams a bit). Outside the car, every gear is very loud from what people say.

cool.

how was that shot though? Camera sitting on the passenger seat?

I mounted a camera on a tripod in the back. things turn out pretty well except for not paying attention to the road:

What's funny Dan?

Jamal - Phone sitting on my passenger seat propped against my backpack and a soda bottle. Sound picked up OK. Least you could hear the CLACK!

How much faster is it really? Are you waiting for the engine to spin down between shifts?

Posted: Thu May 04, 2006 4:20 pm
by BAC5.2
No, I'm not waiting for the engine to spin down.

When I hit 6500, lift off the throttle and yank back on the the shifter simultaneously, immediately slam the throttle open again.

If you watch how fast my leg is moving, I'm in 2nd gear before my foot pushes back down on the gas, and my foot isn't off the gas for very long.

what about downshifting?

Posted: Fri May 05, 2006 3:26 pm
by BAC5.2
What about it?

Downshifting works the same way. Just revmatch and shove it into gear without the clutch.

Ask RallySam. I was doing 20mph clutchless downshifts into 1st gear yesterday.

It was neat :)

Out of curiousity, how do dogbox's do in incliment weather where traction is an issue? Do you have many dogs on winter cars?
