What do you get when you at a Welder, plasma cutter, 1/8th" steel, and about 2 hours of labor together??? Rear HD links!!!

I'm kinda on a budget when it comes to buying stuff for my car, and along with the 24mm rear sway bar I just ordered, I decided I'll probably need some heavy duty sway bar mounts. So instead of spending the $100+ on the whiteline setup, I just modified the stock mounts.

If you dont have a plasma cutter or some kind of metal cutter this is sort of impossible. Anyway you'll need a peice of metal about 6"s by 10"s. Or anything that you can cut 2 plates out of will work.

They aren't painted yet!!

So, after I traced the outside of my mount on the peice of sheetmetal I used my handy plasma cutter to cut the rough shape out, then I used my stationary grinder to fit it a little better to the mount.

also added some little support welds on the inside to ensure strength....i guess...
All the pics are of the finished product, I was too lazy to document it with pics step by step. And aside from have stronger mounts, I feel like I didnt totally waste this day doing nothing... The welds are a little ugly, but form follows function and its under the car so who cares. I'm debating wether to add any more reinforcement to where the mount bolts to the frame. We shall see.

You should build some taller mounts that enable the use of Impreza and forester sway bars. I would buy a set with the quickness.

You mean to clear that bump in our car's spare tire compartment? Hmm. I'll think about it, not sure if I have the skill. I'd probably have to use the stock brace that bolts onto this mount, ya know, the one that the bushing sits in. Hard...

Well I'd be willing to do it. But I think the only way is to get some stock mounts and modify them, I'm still thinking of a way to modify them to make them about an inch longer. So, I'd need you to send me some mounts or pay me in advance so I can go buy some.

But what if he pays you in advance, you screw it up/won't work/etc etc and can't send him a finished product. Are you going to refund his money in full?

If so, just eat the cost yourself up front. You know you've got a market, and you're not risking a buyers money (who wouldn't want to risk it in the first place)

gotta spend money to make money.

what kind of welder did you use to make those welds?

Those would be Gas Metal Arc Welds...or more commonly known as MIG...

Ok, well if you 2 dont mind waiting a while I'll go to the closest subaru yard and pull some rear mounts to experiment on. But dont expect anything spactacular. I have a pretty good HTP welder, like BCTURBO said its a MIG welder, no TIG for me too hard! The welds are a little choppy because I dont have a very good vice to put the part in when I'm welding.

I just put them on, and took a drive. It felt like it might be a little more controlled through turns, but this is probably nothing, I'm guessing its all in my mind.

Hey, thisiskinda related to the custom mounts. I was planning on buying some spherical bearing endlinks for my car. But the 90-91's have a totally different endlink design. Has anyone modified these and their car?
