yo dudes,

just bought a n/a 91 wagon ls that needs an engine. wondering if the engine out of my n/a 92 sedan will bolt in directly? actually im curious about the ecm and sensors: are they all the same or do i need to switch any of them? and if i do, is the wiring harness the same or do i need to update that as well? also, what tips do you guys have for the swap? besides changing the oil pump o-ring, front crank seal and water pump???

My 92 SS has a 91 SS engine in it, it was done by a regular mechanic long before I got the car

Should be a straight swap

Are both the same transmission?

I believe a couple things are different, like the IAC valve.

both M/T.

just make sure you are using all the electric stuff from the original car, IE the MAF must match the ecu, etc
the long block will be a direct swap.

Oh and make sure that whenever you go to get parts for your car in the future that you ask for the right year.


For instance, I got the wrong waterpump for my car because I have a 91 engine, the 92 doesnt have an oil cooler


I dunno if thats the same for N/A engines, I doubt it tho.

It will not quite directly swap, for reasons identified here and a few more.

Does the 91 still have its dead engine in it? If so, then what you need to do is swap the intake manifold from the 91 engine onto the 92 engine. This includes the IAC valve, injectors, and the wiring harness that's strapped to the underside of the manifold. Then, assuming you're still using the stock 91 ECU and stock 91 MAF sensor, you'll be fine.
