Hood scoop needed?

Hey guys, I have been struggling with where to put this thread. This is the only place I think it fits.

I am swapping my EJ22 NA with a EJ22T engine. They engine is currently not intercooled. So my question is do I need to install a hood scoop for cooling or will it be alright with the stock NA hood. I really don't want to go cutting holes in my hood since I just pulled it out of the oven.

One important note to remember. I am going to be brave and try to use my NA radiator with the EJ22T as some others are doing. What do you guys think? If the scoop is needed does anyone know where to buy an aftermarket hoop?

well its depends on if you are going to have a front mount or a top mount intercooler. if you do a top mount yes you will have to cut a hole in your hood. you dont necessarly need to put a scoop for it , but you will need to cut a hole.

if you do a front mount intercooler like mine, then you dont have to cut any holes. plus it would look bad ass. i have a extra 22t hood scoop off my car that im not using.

theres nothing wrong with using your NA radiator. just as long as all the plumming is done right.

and you should have posted this is the Intercooling forum. i dont care. just helps seperate everything

or you could do a cowl induction hood, i dont know how well the air flow on to the radiator would be but on a subaru it would way original, and totally personal

sorry guys, I think you misunderstood me. I am not intercooling the EJ22T yet. I just noticed that all of the EJ22T non intercooled engines still have hood scoops. Is the hood scoop needed to keep under hood temperatures down or is it just to give the sport sedans a different look?

You don't need to run a scoop for the non-intercooled motor...

The factory scoop does channel some air to the turbo for cooling, but it really doesn't need it, so you will be fine with your NA hood. :D

The turbo has a chimney attached to it that feeds up to the scoop. This is used to, as you surmised, keep underhood temperatures down. At slow speeds and while sitting idle, the hot air will move out, but at speed, air probably moved down the chimney.

Anyone who removes the stock turbo and upgrades can not use the chimney, so it's not used at all. A scoop isn't necessary, but it does help.

it helps cool down the turbo a lil bit. it doesnt lower the overall temp of the engine bay. But if you are puting in a 22t i would suggest intercooling. its easy and worth it especially if you plan on running any fuel mods or turbo mods. cause running at 8.5 psi is not fun after a while. you can do a front mount like doug and i for a total of like 230 and that includes shipping. and with the NA's its much easier to run intercooler piping, than it was on mine.

Yeah, I plan on goin FMIC in the future. But thats down the road. This is my project car so it can all happen little by little. The plan is to swap the NA to a EJ22T and then eventually go AWD. Then will come the FMIC, bigger turbo, engine managment....etc.

Thanks for the help guys...You just made my swap a lot easier. The hardest part would have been cutting holes in my freshly painted hood. Not that I don't like body work....its just counter productive.

Thanks!

You are not gonna like having the Turbo motor with FWD...can you say mad wheelspin?!?!

I think that the ej22t scoop is mainly for venting heat when parked.

As part of the metal shrouding below the scoop there is a flat plate, probably designed to prevent deluges of rain from being guided right down to the hot side of the turbo.

This would also baffle air trying to get down at speed.

That location on the hood is likely a high-pressure area at speed, so it wouldn't vent air if the scoop was reversed.

That leaves its main funtion as a vent, when parked.

nothing a wider set of tires and some responsible throttle use wont take care of.

plus the FWDs have a 3.70 final drive intead of the 3.90 that the turbos have.

I agree with greg. Its not going to be a big power house car until it goes AWD. Then I'll TRY spinning tires. Another important item to note is that I have one more year of college to finish up...so the better gas mileage I can get out of the project car the better.

the biggest problem for me was that the inside tires would spin very easily on cornering. i know i lost a significant amount of time on the rally cross course to that. but because the subaru has equal lenght front driveshafts it has almost no torque steer like on a honda or neon.

if you were serious about FWD power you should add a front LSD or weld the front diff.

I am going to see what she acts like with the just FWD...I may go LSD..but again that'll probaly be a project for next summer.

My buddies Honda Civic SI is sporting about 190 whp right now. He doesn't have TOO MUCH of a problem with his. Of course he's kinda like me...just building the car for fun. Not necesarily thinking of chasing down corvettes or anything. :)
