Cost about $180

$180 for what? A new axle? Hope the KY was included!
Oh, and pics

$180 was for a tow, an axle and gave my friend who helped me out the old axle for the core charge ($70)
Pics will be coming soon, I need to get them off my friend.

Holy crap.
Did you replace it with an FWD axle? Those are thicker. Too bad there aren't easily-found thicker rear axles.

What are your mods?

Have you made a habit of launching hard?

I think the breakage was more of my tendancy to launch with boost than the mods I have.
I can't be more than 40hp above stock.
I replaced it with an AWD axle, I didnt realize going FWD was an option at the time

Yeah, every time you launch hard, you tweak the axle a little and work-harden it. This last launch just happened to be the straw that broke the camel's back.
Still, it's amazing. I remember when Phil and I tried to cut an axle once. Those things are crazy strong!

that is damned impressive!!!
Drag racing on Friday made one of my CV's tick, but my brother got me an axle and a hub at Pick a Part for $25

Yea, it took Vikash and I a good bit of a sawzall blade to realize you couldn't cut an axle with any ease. It was easier to cut the lateral links than the axle.
Were you breaking traction on launches?

Brakestand
The term has been out of my loop, but it must mean stepping on the brake while building boost.
Obiously failures can happen.
I haven't tried this launch, but have been just mashing the peddle. The Stall- converter launches the car rather well.
This temperate approach may not last much longer and a broken axle seems possible---are the FWD ones stronger

They're larger in diameter.....more material.....stronger..

Will they fit the back as well

no, they won't fit the back, I can't seem to remember any strengthened R160 rear axels however there are aftermarket ones for the R180

Are the WRX and/or STI shafts stronger?
If the soon to be done next level of performance for the old twgn is somewhere between these two, there may be a problem with shafts.
Unless those for the twgn were originally stronger.

Bah, it's an aftermarket axle anyway. Who knows what they used for the composition of the shaft.
