Gated auto shifter?

Would a gated automatic shifter be interchangeable with the normal shifter on my auto transmission? I'm not looking to change the tranny, just the shifter itself.

I don't think so. Our shifters only move vertically, not horizontally. Perhaps, if one modded the assembly to allow for horizontal movement, it could be possible.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by moving vertically. I looked at a 1st gen auto shifter that had been taken apart at the junkyard and it appeared to me that there was just a rod attached to the shifter that moved forward and backward as the shifter moved. Did I get it confused with something else?

By vertically, he means from the front of the car to the back, versus horizontally, which would be left to right.

The horizontal movement is in the shifter itself, and the movement is independent (above) the portion where the cable attaches to the shifter assembly.
Assuming the mounting plate is similar, I think it would bolt to the chassis, however it probably wouldn't fit overly well between the current trim pieces.
You'd also lose the manual button, and probably have to rewire the connectors from the old shifter assembly to the new assembly so they are "plug & play"
I think it's possibly a doable mod, however I do think it would require a decent amount of work, and still may not have a very asthetically pleasing look.

I could have sworn my friends BP/H/whatever not the new one but the one before it didn't have a button to get the shifter out of park or anything, it just sort-of went.

Yeah, I thought the horizontal movement would just be to move the shifter past the guides and not affect the vertical movement of the connection. I guess I'll have to test this out.
I was also figuring that I'd rewire the manual button down onto the console below, rather than being on the shifter. And I'm already redoing the center console for a different reason.
