i am a 20 year old living on his own and struggeling to get either of my turbo legacies on the road. i am currently driving a beater ford escort that isnt even mine. well anyways, i was doing my deleveries today and i spot a black svx sitting in the parking lot of a mechanics shop, i was intregued so i stopped in and looked it over, its a 92 with 134k and the leather interior, ghetto rollin with snow tires, nice tint, body has a few nice dents and scatched, cracked tail lense,... now im gettin excited at this point, i find the owner of the place its at and the story he tells me is that it belonged to a customer who still owed him money and the car became his, it doesnt take long for me to realize this guy knows nothing about subarus especialy this one. i checked it out after work more thouroughly with my friend whos a mechanic. after i put a battery in it it started rite up... but the power steering pump is fucked and i cant tell if its power steering fluid or oil all around the front, suposidly the tranny was rebuilt recently for about 2 grand. it drove just fine around the parking lot, it just seemed to just need a good tune up and a new pump, plus a bit of bodywork, the interior was a total mess, but it would clean up real nice. i ask the guy what he wants for it expecting some way outta range figure, he tells me some other guy was comin to get it for 800 bucks his weekend. I kept a strait face and asked him if it would be alright if i came back with a car trailer and about 600 bucks by friiday and he was fine with that. i can afford this sorta kinda not really, my guy on one shoulder is telling me to forget it even exists and to focus what litttle income i got on my two broken t-legs, and the other guys tellin me to steal this car for way cheap and drive it, or part it out, i could use the tranny and seats.
i am in a delimma, what should i do? any advice would be greatly appreciated rite now

If I were you, I'd either not buy it, or buy it, but pretty much immediately after buying it, go and sell one or both of the turbo legacies for the cash. Don't get stuck with 3 non working/barely working cars and no cash-you'll be forced to sell them for far less than their worth down the road if you get desperate.

Not sure what to tell you, gut feeling is to stay focused on the T-legs or move on to the SVX and sell the Legs. But be for warned the SVX has some pretty high upkeep costs and a few typical probs. The trans being number 1, if thats been delt with thats good, wheel bearings are another common failing and the deal breaker.... hows the windshield? Last I heard they ran about $1000 to replace, would be cheaper to put on full coverage insurance and eat the deductible to get it fixed.

i cant part with my 94 t-leg i have thrown 2 grand at that since last december and still havent had it on the road yet, as it sits i would have a hard time selling it for 1500, the 92 t- leg is allpaid for and i stored in a barn which is costing me nothing, i bought it for 450 and could sell it for twice that despite the bad tranny, but i have plans for that car someday,
the windshield is all set and i was aware of those other problems, im just not sure if i should get myself involved with such an exotic car, part of me thinks this is a bad idea and i am just getting myself into a world of problems, but it is such a rare sweet dead that i would always regret not taking, this is driving me crazy!

I am gonna play Devil's Advocate and say buy the SVX...It seems like a good deal and that you should be able to sort it out pretty easily.

i will have to agree... THAT IS A FREAKING STEAL! all the ones i see around here are between 3500-6000. ive seen ONE go for 2500. either way, if its just running a little rough, im sure you could make a profit off of it, after fixing the little quirks.

Some elbow grease and a couple bucks and you could turn a nice profit on it, granted its solid.

Hell, you could easily get your money back outta the motor.

Dude, it's probably not even the PS pump that's b0rked. It's probably just the O-Ring under the pump.

SVXi are a rare find indeed. If he's letting it go for a grand and it's fine mechanically, then I'd buy it.

If there's any way to verify the transmission work, I say go for it. You don't want to get stuck with a big bill for trans/diff.

yea, what he ^^^ said. except id sell it for more. they are worth that much more up here.

If you have money issues, I think you should hold off.

yeah dont go making more trouble for yourself than absolutely necessary, unless you are certain you can make a good buck on the car.

Never buy anything you can't easily afford unless it's a house. It's like the old addage about exotics, "If you can't afford the best, you can't afford the rest."

The only SVX Ive found for sale around here has a "partially" screwed tranny, and the guy still wants 2400 for it.

like said earlier, just sell one or both of the legacys, since you know this one runs, just need a new pump and youll have a new daily driver that would beat the hell out of a ford escort with a wet noodle

I should buy and sell SVXs nationally - I see plenty for $1500-2000, sometimes less.

*bump* Ok I brought my white t-legacy to a transmission shop and they have told me they cannot find a reliable tranny anywhere for a decent price and rebuilding the broken one would cost alot too. Im looking at over 2K if i go with either of there options.
The svx is still for sale and i know i can get it for around 500 if i showed the cash. I am Thinking i should buy the car and have the tranny shop swap the recently fixed svx tranny in the t-leg. it would cast me about 1500 after its all done and i'll be left with a running svx with no tranny that i can sell. Should i do it? Will a svx tranny go into a legacy with no issues, whats this i keep reading about diffrent diffs? Or do any of you have a good tranny and live near maine? and help is greatly appreciated

The final drive ratios are different for Legacy and SVX.
