280hp Goals. Ej22t stock longblock limits?

I was throwing around some ideas on how to reach my 280hp goal on this ej22t. Sure, it wouldn't be too hard of a goal if I went dohc, but it would be nice to keep the stock sohc heads since I really like having a non-interference motor. Tried to do some reasearch but couldn't find anything. So I was wondering if anyone has taken thier stock 22t longblock to around the same limits as a stock jdm wrx 280 crank hp? Is it possible on the sohc with just upgrading the fuel, air, tuning and boost mods? Maybe at the most with ARP's to keep the head down?
Preference:
VF22
FMIC (unless my stock wrx tmic will do fine)
Light cam profile (do they make sohc Comp cams?)
Equal length exhaust mani
3" turboback
550cc Injectors
255lph
That seems to me that that might do it (with proper tuning). If not, then I guess I'll have to source some dohc heads, add that too the list and be done with it.

if you had a big enough turbo, sure.... but the power bad would be pretty damn top heavy. get better flowing heads and you'll do it much more easily with less boost.

It really depends what you mean by 280hp
Do you want to make 280hp at 7000rpm, with a torque curve that looks like a skijump
Or do you want a useable 280hp?
You'd probably need to be running 22psi+ to make that kind of horsepower without modifying the heads.
You know you can get Phase II EJ25 heads, which are SOHC, right?
They're not as easy to plumb for coolant and oil, but they'll keep you non interference.

Ah I see. Yeah I am trying to get the throttle response, and useable power of the standard jdm wrx's, thats why I want to try and keep the turbo smaller since the car is meant for daily driving enjoyment. I'm done with large turbo setups. Fun for the track, but definetly not the street and just driving to Mcdonalds.
The p2 ej25 sohc heads sounds like an interesting idea, I'll have to do some research on it. Thanks for the replies.

Well, from all of the written and video reviews I've ever seen of the older fast 2L cars, the Impreza and EVO, the throttle response is awful. Mash the pedal, wait a second, then WHAM. It's not as bad on the USDM WRX, or the modern STI, because of turbo sizing and fancy stuff like twin-scroll turbos.

if McDonalds is your restination for driving... you've got other issues you need to sort out first

^^^ LoL!
how do you get "usable" power? DOHC heads with an appropriately sized turbo with good spool characteristics for the motor?

there have been some good threads on this very topic. go back a few pages.

If restination was a word, I'd be worried...but since it's not, I'll enjoy my $.99 doublecheesburger

. (Unless your scooby doo..."Rerry, Shaggy? Restiration??")But seriously, I see what everyone is saying. I guess I really don't need 280chp since it's just a figurative number. I'm now thinking a head upgrade is definetly neccisary though.

Think about this.
When you're hauling ass, going all out, WOT, shifting at 6500rpms. how far does your rpms drop between gears? Mine is normally about 1500 - so from 6500 to 5000.
even with a top heavy powerband, she'll still haul major ass.
the SOHC heads are pretty damn good and can be ported and polished to do even better.
Does anyone have a dyno sheet of someone pushing 20PSI on a 22T and the resulting power output with stock heads?

For one of the best-known examples of a stock block/ported-heads-with-big-turbo, the b-spec car qualifies:

That car was very, very fast, but not a daily driver.

Want instant boost? One word: Supercharged.
SC x 2 = double the pleasure and 50x the fun!

Byron's reversed intake manifold looks like a polished stock ej22t mani. Is that possible? If so, it would make fmic routing super easy.

I guess that really depends on the turbo thats pushing 20psi since airflow will be different from turbo to turbo. But I too would like to know if anyone has done a 16g or similar turbo to around 18-20psi on stock sohc heads and their power gains.

Are you sure about that? SOHC EJ25 engines are interference engines. Can you steer me towards where you got this info so I can verify it?
Also, the stock up-pipe will nick the back corner of the heads. Not anything that can't be resolved with a spacer and the body english of a hammer, but it does need addressing...
I haven't seen any genuine bench flow numbers for ported Ej22T heads, but by my calculations, one should be able to make them flow about the same as stock Ej205 heads with a good porting...

Its because of valve clearance issues with the pistons on the NA block
The lower compression pistons in the 22T block wont strike them

I'll have my EJ25 SOHC heads back from the machine shop in a day or two. I'll measure everything when I put the engine back together and let you know. I assume it would still be interferance though... maybe not with turbo pistons though. Wait a week and I'll know for sure.

thanks. That's the kind of empirical verification I am looking for. I hate internet rumours where Jonnie's cousin's sister's boyfriend told me that he build a hybrid motor and it was...
I would need to go take a look at the lift specs on both sets of heads, but IIRC the SOHC Ej25 heads have more valve lift than Ej22 heads...
