Subject: ghetto ecu disable

I don't really want an alarm, but while I'm shopping for one, and maybe in addition to getting a REAL alarm, I'd like to rig a disabler.

I understand we've discussed this previously in an idea using a reed switch (a magnetically thrown switch, right?) and one of those switched fuses.

Is it possible to have a reed switch to control a switched fuse for the ecu? I also see a benefit here, in that some of us who throw codes would have a freshly reset ecu when they return to their car, if gone long enough.

Any thoughts?

the only thing with reseting the ecu is that arent you suppose to let it idle and relearn like 5 minutes right after you reset it and then drive it? i thought i had read that somewheres

Yea you usually get crap performance and mileage the first hundred miles after an ECU reset while it relearns

or if you dont wanna do fuel pump cut... it might be different and kinda cool if you could do a cut that resembles disconnecting the coilpack plug... that would be neat

The ECU's backup power supply that keeps memory intact is independent of the main power supply that it runs the ECU. If you want your ECU to be forgetful just pull the interior EGI fuse.

The ECU actually gets its primary power through the ignition relay. If you put a kill switch in line with the coil of the ignition relay you'll disable pretty much the entire engine management system when the kill switch is open.

The MSD DIS-2 has an ignition kill feature that most people aren't aware of.
