How do people take off their steering wheels? The guy at the junkyard undid the center bold and then just kind of hit it with a hammer until it came off. There has to be a better way.

Random question: If I pulled a control stalk with a wiper control that has variable intermittance, would it work on my Legacy which doesn't have variable intermmittance?

Works on mine, so it should work on yours. The variableness is done by the control unit that the stalk is connected to. It is direct plug-and-play.

You don't have to remove the steering wheel to finagle the wiper switch out. I swapped wiper switches between my car and a 97 Legacy GT (so I could have variable intermittent wipers) leaving both steering wheels in place.

You should be able to figure this out just by looking at what you've got in that picture. Basically, there are a couple of Phillips-head screws (I think) holding the wiper stalk in.

A generous soul actually did a thorough writeup of this and included pictures. You should be able to find it with some searching.

I actually already did it... borrowed that steering wheel puller from Autozone and spent an hour or two in the lot there pulling and putting in parts. The variable intermittent wiper stalk is now in and working.

I think it's actually easier once you pull the wheel because it's not as much trouble to route the cable and screw the thing in. Once I got the wheel puller working it was a piece of cake.

Yeah, it probably is easier as long as you don't have an airbag.

I didn't even need a puller when I pulled off my wheel. Just put my hands at 3 and 9 and wiggled it a bit.

That didn't work for me -- mine was really stuck on there.

If you're just pulling with your hands, be sure to have a pillow or something on your chest.

Airbag equipped wheels require safety torx and unplugging the airbag and cruise. Which also involves unplugging the battery and attempting a quick drain or waiting the recommended hours... But I already bought all the torx bits, so I'd probably just take the wheel off.

And when getting steering wheels off, you need to use a see-saw motion. Actually pushing on one side with all of your body weight, then the other. Then pull with all your might on one side and the other. Once its loose you can pull it off normally. Trying to just pull straight up right away will always be a losing battle unless your arms operate hydraulically and you are bolted to the floor of the car.
