JDM AWIC

Ive got a line on a JDM AWIC. Just the intercooler itself, not the radiator, pump or reservoir

The guy wants $200

What do you think?

eh...........

You need a GOOD pump, a GOOD AND BIG radiator and a resevoir.

I am happy I swapped to front mount. But I also had a few issues turboes dont.

Id be going with a marine bilge pump, a semi truck oilcooler or something as a rad, and a reservoir in the stock battery location.

Im planning on running high compression/medium boost (9.5:1, 14PSI) on a TD04 or something similar. Alcohol injection and an access in the reservoir for ice on trackdays.

I dont want to run a FMIC because:
1. I dont think its necessary for the levels of boost I want to run
2. I hate the way the piping looks
3. I dont want to modify my bumper
4. The prospect of sub-ambient intake charge temps makes me all tingly

That's very high for just the intercooler...

They routinely go for between $50 and $75

We ran one for a bit on Erics car utilizing the AC condensor as the radiator, and fabbed up piping and used a simple marine pump with an on off switch in the cabin. The only OEM piece we used was the AWIC.

We also have more than on in Tacoma right now available if interested PM me.

You cant get sub-ambient with a frontmount...



How did the AC condensor flow? I did a flowtest using the AC evaporator and it sucked balls. The R12 liquid has a much lower viscosity than water.

It might suck I don't know. Eric's setup worked thats all I can say and the AC condensor is already on the car. It was more of an experiment than anything.

I personally like Air to Air, much less weight, less complexity.

I dont have an AC condensor, so itd be easier for me to put on a Sprint radiator or something :P

I like AWIC because its a much cleaner looking install, with less lag and less pressure drop

DO NOT use the a/c condensor. It flows freaking horribly.

Even with a massive pump, you'd only get a few gpm through it.

I've got a pretty beefy pump, and two smaller trans coolers running in parallel and will probably see around 4 gpm through the system.

I eventually want to get a larger radiator. The stock AWIC flows about 5 gpm with the pump I have, so that will ultimately be my limiting factor on flow rate.

With nothing attached it flows 5gpm?

With the pump I have hooked up to just the AWIC and being powered by just a battery it flowed around 5 gpm.

With the car running, it'd probably flow a tad more.

I am running it through the condensor, and it works very well...


I don't know where the hell you got the idea that you can't get sub-ambient with a front mount...because I've seen it happen man

Uh, because you cant use air to cool something lower than its own temperature.

The only way its possible is if you had a CryO2 sprayer

The pressure drop through the condensor is VERY high for how large it is. I think the reason it works alright, is because it has such a large suface area.

Yea but you'd need to find a way to cool the water below ambient

And if you're doing that, waterspray, water cooler, pump, reservoir....

Why not just go AWIC, get a way better flowing IC and be done with it?

Actually its the thermodynamics of the process of water evaporating off the core that could make charge temps cooler than ambient. Evaporating pulls the heat out of the core thus enabling sub-ambient temps. This is the purpose of water sprayers.

I have no practical experience with this, but I do understand the possiblitily and why. :-D

Think about how cold youd have to get a frontmount in order to get the air temp below 20C, when its coming in at 140C and spends a fraction of a second inside the frontmount

You cant get it that cold just by spraying ambient temp water on it.

Just to elaborate on IC sprayers, etc to get colder then ambient temps.

As mentioned, the evaporating water is what causes the temperature to be reduced below ambient. The technical term is called the latent heat of evaporization.

You have two kinds of "heat" Sensible and latent. Sensible is what you feel, and is directly responsible for air-to-air type of exchangers. Latent deals with moisture.

If you have water at certain temperature, say 70 degrees F. Let's say you have a fan blowing across an intercooler that you're spraying water onto. You then collect water dripping off the intercooler at the bottom. That water will be at a lower temperature because it released energy from the molecular level of the water evaporating.

Simple way to think of it is blowing across wet skin, and it feeling cool.

Yes but its still not going to be cool enough to drop 140C air to below 20C

You need a lot of heatsink capacity to do that.

Not that its really necessary, there isnt going to be a lot of difference in engine combustion between 15C air and 40C air.
