turbo support bracket?

I've been reading nasioc posts on weather or not these are a good idea, mainly because I don't have one and i'm going with the stock setup.
The posts I've been reading essentially state that the pressure the bracket exerts on the up pipe and flex sections is sufficient over time to make them develop cracks/breaks and essentially trash the stuff.
Then I've seen a few projects involving custom manifold work and no support brackets, so this begs the question - how necessary are these? can the six bolts holding the manifold to the block also support the weight of the up pipe and the turbocharger? obviouslly the downpipe will be supported by the transmission exhaust mount - and my DP is pretty light, about 7 pounds or so.
