I might or might not have gotten fired today. I am a laborer in construction and I was told I was going to get last week off because of the post-poned pouring of the slab for the building. I got a call last monday from my boss, asking if I would work Tuesday. I said yes because I kinda needed the money. So at the end of the work day on tuesday I was asked to word wednsday doing cleanup. Once again I agreed. So wednsday comes around and I end up working about 20 minutes late, so I took off in a hurry without really talking to anyone since I had some errands to do before going home. No one mentioned anything to me that whole day about working the following thursday and friday. So of course I didn't show up to work thursday, or the following day. My boss only has my cell phone # and it just so happens I dont get signal at my house which was where I was stuck thursday and friday. So there was no way to get ahold of me to tell me I was supposed to be at work!

I come in today bright and early (10 minutes early to be exact) at 6:20am and as I walk towards my boss to get instructions on what to do, he gives me this death stare, like I had just done something really bad. So as I approach him he give me the story of how i was supposed to be there and how they all had to work their asses off to make up for me not being there. And when I tried to tell him I probably wouldn't have made it there anyway since my car was broken down he just said that was a weak escuse in the real world and that broken cars shouldn't keep me from getting to work. He then proceeds to tell me that as of thursday he didnt think he wanted me to work for him ever again, and that the foreman of the job would call me up later that day to talk to me about my job. Whom of course never called me, even though I repeatedly called my boss and left 2 messages asking him if I should come in tomorrow or not.

So basically I don't know if i have a job anymore. Sorry I just had to vent and get the whole story out.

Cliff Note: I missed 2 days of work that I had no idea I was supposed to be there and now I might get fired even though my boss didn't bother to get my home phone number to get a hold of me...

Doesn't sound like it was a very good job anyway.

Having worked construction to pay my way through the last 4 years of school I've seen people pull 'no-shows' all the time for some pretty bullshit excuses. If you're willing to come in when they call you and ask for you to be there tomorrow but can't cut you any slack for a faulty car - F'em. I mean I know it sucks to potentially lose a job but if they're that big of assholes then you don't really need to be working for them anyways. There's always other construction work to be found, particularly concrete workers.

Goodluck though.

Sounds to me like your boss is pretty unprofessional. I spent a couple summers in the business and its all too common.

It really grinds my gears (Peter Griffin) when someone gets all pissed of at you for their own lack of effort.

Yeah, my boss was still set on it all being my fault yesterdday when I went back to see if I still had a job. He couldn't get over the fact that I didn't come in those 2 days even though no one tried to confirm that I would be there. But whatever. I have my job still, and I am starting to think he just felt like giving me a lot of shit for no reason.

He is one of those guys that expects everything tp be done just as perfect as he has envisioned it in he head, and even then when you do it just like he tells its still not good enough.

The good news is there is a new kid starting monday, he has an '04-'05 wrx, with just 2 mods that I could see; exhaust and wheels. So I am stoked to have another car junkie on the job...

I havent had a construction job yet where the boss wasnt bipolar. pretty stressful work for all involved. sometimes fun and rewarding, but mostly painful, dirty and dangerous. arent you sick of being too tired to do anything after work, and your hands aching every morning? get out of construction asap, the money isnt that good and youre just killing yourself. be an electrician, plumber or welder or go to college or something. there are night classes for lots of stuff. electrician or plumber, you still get to be on the jobsite and its not as hard of work. welder, so many options and BIG bucks in pipeline stuff, especially once you start getting some overtime. college, even more options.

well I am pretty young right now, so this job pays pretty good. I am seriously considering applying over at this company called "Rackit" they make the racks you can buy for pickup trucks. And they weld them up, so I could easily get good enough at welding.

The only thing is they kinda need me at the job I am working at now, I'm kinda the only person that fills in the gap between laborer and carpenter

That would be called leverage. Boss goes apeshit again, shrug your shoulders and move on. If he needs you around that badly, shrug your shoulders and get more money out of him. If not, you got that welding job ahead of you.

I also recommend a trade. Stay out of drugs unlike too many in the trade and you can make some damn good money with some hard work and brains. Telecom is big right now depending on where you are. There's tower work if you're not afraid of heights and if you can learn more technical shit there's damn good money in that. FEMA plans for this year's hurricanes are already quoting several hundred an hr. for dudes with a man-basket truck.

Construction attracts severe ADD, gypsies, hedonist drug/alcohol/prostitute abusers, and intelligent less severe ADD who can't stand working in an office and who's dream job of contract killing scum bags is incompatible with their fear of jail and subsequent anal rape.

Keep your head, be responsible, do good work and your reputation will get around. Especially if you work around other contractors (ie opening yourself to job options with other contractors).

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! the crazy thing is that is true! Thanks for the advice, I always thought I'd go to Wyotech and make ok money until I could open up my own performance shop, but who knows, it sounds like there are a lot of trade jobs about there that pay damn good.

It seems that 2 of my "bosses" (basically carpenters that have been with the business for a while) think I am deserving of a raise, so thats cool.

Oh and to confirm evolutionmovement's point about what kind of people work in construction. I work with a druggy who is 32 but looks 50, an alcoholic that has been known to take a flask to work, and this weird guy that calls his wife his "old lady"...

Calling your wife your 'old lady' is a fairly common expression

one year the crew I worked with was a bunch of bosnians who sounded like they were cussing each other out when they were having a normal conversation, a manic depressive homeless guy who claimed to have been a member of the hells angels and murdered a lot of people, a vietnam paratrooper vet who was an ex heroin addict, had lung cancer, and throat cancer, and an evangelical christian who, uh, didnt quite fit in. but all of them were very nice people, though all were a little off their rockers. the hells angel guy and one of the bosnians absolutely HATED each other, so that produced some good entertainment.
