Timing belt tensioner- new part number?

When I asked for a 13033AA002 I was told by the Subaru dealership parts department that the new number for the timing belt tensioner is 13033AA042. This looks like an entirely different part than the original one. Does anyone know if this is an appropriate part for my 1991 EJ22t?

Entirely different how? They're probably stupid and tried to sell you one from a Phase II EJ22 or other newer engine.

The correct one works horizontally and does not have the pulley attached. The new one works vertically and does have the pulley attached.

I'll try to remember to get the correct part # on Monday.

Yeah, that's exactly what they did. Thanks, that's enough confirmation for me, I'll beat them up over it on Monday. I guess I won't be back on the road this weekend. Suck.

They are interchangeable, as with everything else subaru

Not unless you replace the mounting bracket with a phase II bracket from a SOHC engine.

I have seen both styles on phase I 2.5's.

Yes, but in order to fit a Phase I vertical bracket you have to cut part of it off. The part that bolts to the middle bolt on the inner timing cover.

13033AA042 will NOT fit on a 1991 EJ22t. The current number for the appropriate part is:

13068AA051

I'll do a wrap up post in my other thread with all part numbers after I put the car back together tonight.

huh? I have the new version on my engine, seemed to bolt up fine. The engine isn't totaly back together yet, but it seemed like it fit right in.... what do you think you need to cut?

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about. The new style tensioner won't bolt up to the front of the block. There is only one bolt on it, so if you cut that off- you're sunk. Also, the one bolt that is on there is of larger diameter than the original bolts for the old style tensioner. And there is no "feature" for the tension plunger to push against like on the newer blocks. It's just an incompatible part.

I've already returned the incorrect part, and the parts counter guy confirmed that it is the wrong part for the application.

I think you have misunderstood the part I'm talking about. subyluvr2212 knows what I'm saying.

I understand completely what you're talking about. Reference any DOHC vertical tensioner bracket to know what I'm talking about.

I found a photo of the vertical type:

http://www.imagestation.com/3102958/4262543570

Here is a shot of the horizontal type:

http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo36/DSCN0635

Of the three pulleys directly below the alternator, the tensioner is the one on the right. The plunger (part 13068AA051) is the horizontal feature just behind and to the right of the tensioner pulley.

I can't imagine a way to use the newer vertical type on a block designed for the older horizontal type. Please explain, I would appreciate very much if you could show me what I'm not understanding.

You have to change the bracket. The piece of aluminum that the tensioner bolts to.

ahh... you need the whole thing. The mount that the tensioner uses to mount to the block needs to go with the tensioner. If you swap both parts it works. I'll see if I can snap a shot of the part thats missing in your photos.

dont buy a new one. go to a junkyard and get a good used one.. i dont know how much the new ones are just because i always get mine from junkyards......i heard that they are like 128 bucks. just for the tensioner.......is this true or close to true?

Depends on what you mean by "close to true." In this case you are about 30% off. It's $90 from my local dealer.

subaruparts.com has it for $79, but you figure $14-20 for one or two day shipping and you might as well pick it up on your lunch break.

By the way, you don't have to rely on rumors for parts prices... just pick up the phone or point your web browser to the right place and you can get real prices.

Our scoob dealership won't even look up part #s without a VIN # for the vehicle (which is a pain when you need a WRX part), and even then they won't give out the numbers.

Technically, I'm not supposed to look up Soob parts without a VIN either, according to my asst. manager.

But I don't necessarily need one :D

I disagree with getting a used tensioner. The way I figure, that one probably isn't much better than yours. But, I disagree with getting most mechanical junkyard parts :?

I agree. If I'm going to the trouble of getting in there, I want to put in part that I have some reasonable expectation of getting some mileage out of. I'd keep my 119k mile original rather than get one out of a junkyard.

agreed, $105.37 at thepartsbin.com that took all of 20 seconds to lookup.

or here for $94.71 .. they are both worldpac, so its the exact same part from the same place http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/apw_s ... n+Adjuster
