Stock boost controller??

I just bought a 93 SS. Is this red solenoid the stock boost controller?

The thing below it is a pressure regulator the previous owner installed. I'm trying to figure out how to remove it.

Thanks.

Ok no is not, but its close :-D . I reconnected the stock boost controller and it still runs wastegate pressure (6psi). So it looks like it was either broken or got gunked up when it wasn't being used (2 connections were left open) . Would this give any CELs because the check engine light has been on "since the pressure regulator was put on.

Will cleaning the stock controller will help?

What is that red solenoid looking thing anyway?

The stock boost controller is below all that, with the three tube fittings on it. The top piece with the two-wire connector is the pressure exchange solenoid - switches between the MAP sensor and an atmospheric vent so the ECU can measure both at will.

That thing with the knob on it is not supposed to be there... an interesting way to attempt to control boost, but it's intended to regulate the pressure on an air compressor.

Check your hose routing, if you're getting 6 psi your stock controller's either disconnected or faulty electrically, or your wastegate actuator is directly connected to your compressor. Here's a diagram that may help you:

The controller is getting power. I think its borked. Its not a big deal since I wont be using it after the swap.

If you totally remove the controller (replace it with an aftermarket one) What kind of resistor works best to fool the ecu into thinking the controller is there?

Thanks

So you changed all the plumbing back to stock, including removing that weird pressure regulator? Did you reset the ECU?

A 470-ohm 2-watt resistor will do fine to pacify the ECU. It might get a little warm, so be careful where you mount it.

I soldered in a 500ohm 2watt resistor (2 1000ohm 1 watt resistors) in place of the boost controller and the CEL is still on.
That was as close as I could find to 470ohm 2 watt.
hmmmm

check the CEL codes and its 22 and 35.

knock sensor and canistor purge solenoid valve.

I should have pulled the codes before putting the resistor in then eh.... haha. oh well.

knock sensor kinda scares me a little.

35 seems to be a very common problem

Is the canistor purge solenoid valve the boost controller?

knock sensor kinda scaes me a little.
Firstly, no, the canistor purge soleniod is not the boost controller. The purge soleniod is mounted to the number 1 intake runner, on the bottom back side. Its kinda a pain to change but not to hard.

And secondly, the knock sensor is nothing to fear :D , its probably just the old style(the one that cracks), just get a new one from subarparts.com or something and install it. It is located to the right of the throttlebody, and just behind the #4 intake runner, mounted to the block with a songle bolt through the middle.

Is there anyway to check the canistor purge solenoid to see if is the soldenoid or just a leak somewhere......other than checking for leaks hahah

spray carb cleaner down the tubes?

Honestly, its probably just a bad soleniod. Just re-place it. A leak wouldn't cause the CEL, the CEL comes on because the soleniod isnt activating.

Does my 95 L have a solenoid that I could swap with?

I love code 35.
This problem made my SS the unloved child to someone.
NOW SHE'S MINE!!
Easy fix.

The purge solenoid code is only thrown if there's something electrically wrong with the purge soleniod. What usually happens is heat and vibration cause minute cracks in the solenoid's coil (since it's mounted directly to the intake manifold), resulting in an open circuit.

With a knock sensor code active, the ECU will limit boost to the wastegate level.
