They separate from the frame.
IIRC, the screws to remove the speakers are under some foam, so they are kinda hidden.

You can take the plastic frame out with 2 nuts. The speakers can be removed from the frame with the screws.
I think most aftermarket speakers sized 5.25" will work. On the right side there may be some buzzing due to interference from the metal fuel filler tube that sits under the speaker; so don't get deep ones.
Enjoy not listening to music through moldy paper cones.

I just picked up a set of Fusion 6.5" speakers which the stereo shop's lookup said would fit. They most certainly did not fit. The problem being that they're Fusion's OVERSIZED 6.5" speakers instead of normal ones. Usually on most cars there's enough wiggle room to squeak them in. Not in the rear of the wagon though. I exchanged them for a pair of kenwood 6.5" that are not oversized and I'm currently waiting for the wife to stop driving the wagon around so I can install them. If they don't fit I'm going to take my dremel to that mounting plate thing and/or the stereo shop guy's face
cliff notes: install books say 6.5" for our application. Some brands cheat their sizes to be bigger so be forewarned.

That's what happened when I put a pair of Rockford Fosgates in my SS. They didn't fit, but then when I blew those and swapped to Polk speakers that fit perfectly.
