help!

i got a scan cable made and i am borrowing a laptop and im useing the vwrx tool but i cant get it working
i have a 1992 awd auto turbo
playing around i got some thing i think is my rom id 464849
but it does not work.
if any one can give me some insite on how to make this thing work i would love it

i made a Parallel port cable like here (
http://www.graphics.cornell.edu/~v/b10scan/) and borrowed a firends laptop and downloaded the softwear from that site.
when i open SelectMonitorDump.exe and click get rom id it says port closed. what do i have to do to make it work?
and then once i have found my rom id, what do i change in the SelectMonitor.ini?
also in the .ini should any thing in this line change?
;Comm Port number to use (i.e. which serial port)

also i tryed the dos program b10scan.com
and when it opens, even when i press keys, nothing happens
