So Im going to take the shafts to work on tuesday to see what can be done with them...

The front diff and rear diff are in the trunk of the legacy, do I need to be worried about anything rusting?

looks like you are going to need a new upper shaft. i would suggest finding a used legacy or impreza 5spd either for a replacement or to replace the parts you need. good luck.

I supposedly have a new tranny coming... we'll see if he pulls through or not tho

But I work at a subaru dealership, so Im bringing in the fucked shafts on tuesday and see what the mechanics say

Mechanic will say "buy a new tranny"

New gears are super exspensive, and 2nd gear is only availble from Japan. I know. At least if its the NA tranny.

Yes, time for a new trans. Ever seen the prices for that much hyped STi RA gearset? Ridiculous.

You would need a main shaft & matching 2nd gear for the driven shaft.

On the main shaft? From the pic, there sure doesn't look to be any....maybe in the tranny case.

Needed: New Input Shaft. New Output 1st gear.

Source? What tranny is it? Not an SS tranny, but definately pre-99. So probably an RS tranny. RS gears are easy to come by. But WRX gears don't work (syncro hubs, and thus shift collars changed after 99).

RA gears are the biggest waste of money anyone could comprehend. Can you imagine spending $1500 on OEM gears? You buy them, install them, that brings the bill to $2250 (plus tax and shop supplies, gears and labor only, no syncros).

You've now spent $2250 on gears that are no stronger than a stock set of 03.5+ WRX gears (which I have seen broken with stock WRX power).

It's a tough bullet to bite, to spend twice that on a REAL built transmission, but then again, you know you won't be spending the money twice... Blow a set of RA gears, and you have now spent MORE than it would have cost to do it right the first time.

Just unleashing all of my pent up anger and frustration about the fact that people STILL waste money on RA gearsets.
