does this sound like a recipe for disaster?

okay so i'll be doing a ej22t swap by next spring, i have almost everything i need , i just need to assemble the motor and find some management, BUT in the meantime i am gonna do what many of done before me, and turbo an n/a 2.2, basicly what i have is a 1996 2.2 single port phaze 2 with 170K on it, strong as hell still, but i basicly dont care what happens to this thing, i just want an extra 30-50 more hp. the setup i will be running is a vf11, running off the wastegate, with a helper spring, so around 4-5 psi, forester XT intercooler, stock injectors, stock ecu, custom up pipe coming from n/a borla headers, and a custom d/p...think this will last longer then 5 minutes?

you can run as high as 12 psi without detonation? is that on race fuel? What turbo are you running? I still haven't got my engine back together, but on the old setup I could bearly run 10 on a cool day. It was fast as hell with that much boost though. There were a lot of things wrong with that setup that are fixed in version 2.

Yes that is with race gas and now I am installing water injection, but I am running stock injectors stock fuel system other than an apexi afc, I am also running a dsm side mount ic so it is a lot more efficant than ours the basis of any turbo build is fuel manigement if you do a good job at that nothing else will be stressed and stock internals will last a lot longer. I am runing a vf11 ported and polished from a 05 forester.

Uhh an 05 forester turbo would be a td04..i know because i have one as well, (im not using it for this setup) do you think i could get away with no mangement and 4 or so psi? if not i have turbo legacy injectors i could use.

I was running 6-7 psi intercooled with no management and really no problems save for hot days. That was on the Toyota CT-26 turbo, which is a LOT larger and more efficient than anything that ever came on a Subaru. New setup is a 60-1 T3/T4 which should be mildly better suited to the Subaru engine.

Just an update, its still running, well over 200K miles now, made 201 whp and 212 wtq.
Looking to do a turbo camshaft swap, do you guys think its worth it to have delta do a re-grind?

I want pix of this setup! This sounds like a load of fun. Great to hear it's still running.

I'd like to add, this car is possibly the best sounding Subaru I've ever heard. Borla N/A headers with a turbo equals teh sex.

I don't think that video even does it justice. It sounds much better when I'm standing on the deck at t3h IceraceZ. None of the other Subarus sound like it.

Reminds me of my friends 20G swapped Impreza L with a Blitz Nurspec exhaust. Has a nice tough and throaty growl to it.

I knew there would be at least one with SOME doubt

So here is my exact setup. My entire setup consists of these items.
STOCK internal 1996 ej22, w/ single port heads.
Legacy turbo injectors.
Weapon R adjustable fuel pressure regulator
STI fuel pump
FXT top mount
Front 02 sensor moved closer to heads (about a foot closer then it is in stock form)
1997 legacy LSi (yes DOHC!) ecu plugs right in, throws an immediate code for fuel temp sensor, but it runs great (and has since about 2005, and will rev to 6500 now.
Ebay t04E turbo
borla single port header
custom up pipe
custom down pipe
TXS BOV.
11lb flywheel
Oh and to update my first post on here, this is NOT a phaze 2 2.2 I meant to say its obd2. It still looks like the old school 2.2, just with single port heads.
whp/wtq numbers

that's incredible and seems like a great budget sleeper build. i am quite impressed with the output numbers and i think it's interesting to compare these to the dyno sheet posted on revtronix's site for the stage 2 legacy engine management chip -
http://revtronix.com/sites/default/file ... e2TD04.png
i certainly don't want to incite a heated debate and i'm not trashing anyone's build or product because i plan on going revtronix when i do my turbo swap and intercooler install. i merely would appreciate the discussion of how the output numbers differ. it looks like this build pulled higher whp while the revtronix chip pulls higher wtq.
N/A conversion at 11psi = 201/212
revtronix = 176/232
does is really come down to the headers? it allows better breathing sure, but i'm surprised that much difference was achieved.
what say the more seasoned engine gurus?
thanks
dk

I would say there is probably alot of safety built into that chip, I'm going to be the first to say it, someone would probably not want to replicate my build and expect results, or failures. I've always thought of my car as being a freak of nature.

I'm working on getting my dyno graph posted....
Posted: Thu Oct 29, 2009 6:43 pm
by awdimprezal
actually, your graph you posted was for a 4eat. they suck WAY more power then the 5mt

I'm just going to point out that the Revtronix graph isn't really 'reliable.' It was done using a g-force meter and some crazy algorithms haha. I'd wait until someone actually gets their car dyno'd and posts results before comparing anything to those.
