Has anybody put in a WRX exedy clutch on a 92 turbo ss? \
I understand the 02 wrx clutch will work, without changing out the flwheel, etc? but the threads are conflicting on whether a stock SS flywheel is okay, some threads say the WRX flywheel is also needed.

part number please for the clutch kit.? see above, just for the disc, for a 04 wrx turbo

update, I have been reading threads for around 2-3 hours now.
I have run into conflicting info.

Some threads say a WRX clutch kit with the WRX flywheel is needed, and the conflict thread said just the WRX clutch kit, not the flywheel.

I need answers on this soon.

Can I use my stock 5mt SS flywheel, and order the WRX exedy clutch kit? geesh, all those threads and my eyes are tired

please chime in if you installed a WRX clutch kit but used your stock flywheel.

This can be a bit confusing, but I'll break down what I can remember for you -

The WRX flywheel is not physically bigger (the starter teeth still mate up properly and are at the proper diameter), but the friction area on the clutch and flywheel is about 3mm larger than the Legacy Turbo. This means that a WRX clutch would not work with a stock Legacy flywheel (at least, I've never heard of anyone attempting this)... but vice versa should be OK. (WRX flywheel with stock Legacy clutch).

Of course, WRX flywheel + WRX clutch = optimal in this case.

I'd suggest going with a wrx clutch kit and a lightened flywheel. WOOHOO

well, I just picked up the whole OEM clutch assembly, disk, pressure plate, and flywheel from a WRX for only 50 bucks shipped. It is said to have 35k miles on it, but said to still work okay. So, once i get it, and inspection is made, will decide if i need new clutch disk for it or not.
I didnt want the side effects of a ligthened flywheel;

Well, the WRX clutch and Flywheel are in my car now. Just got it back together this afternoon after working most of yesterday on it all. My stock flywheel had stress fractures/heat cracks ALL over. The old disc was barely into the rivets, which was why it was still driving, it wasn't slipping in 1st or second but slipped in 3rd thru 5th if you gave it some acceleration, which it would slip then catch again and be okay.

I compared the stock flywheel with the WRX flywheel, both are pretty much the same, just a slight difference in the way it is manufactured. . the OEM style Disc was like ~1/4 inch smaller in Diameter, than the Exedy WRX one. Both are same size, and darn near the same weight, by guessing weight.
EXEDY DISC part number is : FJD024U Daikin Clutch

I used the OEM 04 WRX flywheel, with 35k miles, it was in great shape, didnt need resurface, straightedge across it was perfect, and no spotting. We did use an orbital snader to buff it out some to make sure there was no possibility of glazing still on.
I used the OEM 04 WRX Clutch cover, it only had 35k miles and looked real good, and measured tolerances good too.
Anyways, its all back together. Many of the bolts for the turbo heatshiled/chimney were broken off, so we took lots of time to drill them out, and retap the threads for new bolts. Oh, I will write more on this clutch replacement later. We went the route of pulling the engine forward by removing the radiater. Also we made the alignment tool with some metal sleaves, and punch and solid round metal thing for pilot bearing.

Ah, now the bad part : of having to wait til i go thru the break-in before I even get on the gas much.
Gonna go drain the gear oil when my Redline Lightweight Shockproof arrives, i think i hear UPS truck now. Gonna do the Scotty's cocktail on the fluid.

Hey you actauly could have used your legacy SS flywheel with a exedy wrx clutch kit. I did and it worked fine... Just my tranny shifter linkage went out... :( So im lookin for a new tranny but it had 190k on it never rebuilt so it was asking to happen.

Yes, I have confirmed that a WRX disc and an SS flywheel will work. You NEED the WRX pressure plate though.

yes, correct. I had to go with the WRX fly ccause my SS flywheel had cracks through it even resurfacing wouldnt help it.
