Is it posible to put ej25 (DOHC) heads on the ej22e block if so what else would i need to perform the swap ( timing belt, intake manifold etc....

Jesus Christ, what's with our members acting like aaholes towards noobs recently???

Arturo,
The Ej25 DOHC heads on the Ej22e block is a great combination if you are intending to install a turbocharger. If not, it's not worth doing. It drops your compression ratio to a very boost friendly mid- 8's. For NA it wouldn't be very desireable. A couple of my friends has built this hybrid and run 13-15psi at it for extended periods of time without blowing their bottom end. You will need the Ej25 manifold, as the bolt pattern is different...

Thanks

yes i intend on instaling a turbo im going to put the whole wrx set-up i got it from a friend for free and i just wanted to know since the ej25 heads have more aftermarket suport that the ej22's. and you said that the bottom end fails but what exactly (pistons, rods or crankshaft) i want to know to replace it while doing the heads. And once again thanks for the info and sammydafish you talk like if you own a ricer buddy whats up!!!

Arturo,
If you are going to be using the Td04 WRX turbo, there's no reason to beef anything up in the bottom end. IF your block is over 80k mi, you might want to preemptively do the bearings for the crank and the rods, but it's not required.

My friends that have done this build have run some pretty big turbos at this set up. One of them was the actual turbo that was once on Xephyr's car as referenced in the Ej22T FAQ. (the turbo is a one of a kind custom ball bearing turbo built by Turbo Engineering Corp in Golden, CO . The easiest way to describe it is that it has the T04S .74 A/R compressor of the Garret GT35R, with the .86 A/R turbine of the Garret GT28/35R. Both wheels are the more efficient ballistic concepts series axial vane wheels. It starts boosting at 2700 rpm, reaches 25 psi at 36-3700 rpm, and holds it to 8000 rpm. )

That's a pretty big turbo, and the stock open deck Ej22e with DOHC Ej25 heads ran for more than 50k mi at 13-15psi.with occasionally going up to 16-18psi for 1/4 mi duty.

If you want to know the ultimate weakness of the Ej22e, it's the rods. Above 350chp, if you don't have a good tune and get detonation or preignition, you can destroy the rods (and bearings as well). But if you tune it correctly and set it up right, there's little to worry about...

ok,ok,ok

now i know im using low levels of boost but can i use wrx or STI rods and pistons and about the bearings what type of bearings can handle high levels of power and who developes it. In simple terms imagine that you are building a economic 250-300whp engine using a ej22e block what would u use being realistic using a budget around $1000-1500 budget.

If I was building a 250-300whp engine using the Ej22e block, I would just use a stock block of known good condition...

you should buy my sohc ej25 heads, they were destined for one of these motors but for me it is not to be.
sohc vs dohc, you gotta go sohc. :P

sorry for the shameless plug:

so why are sohc better than dohc?

When you have our stock Legacy's with the SOHC, timing belt failure wont blow up your engine because it is non-interference.

The opposite goes for DOHC. Called an interference design.

-But-

You can get more power with DOHC, they are more efficient.

So, I guess it depends on how you look at it, Dependability or Power.

Did this brilliant analysis really warrant bumping a 6 month old thread? If you don't have a question that is on topic and warrants revisting an old discussion, please leave old dead threads old and dead... :-D

i got a question.... which would be a better match up, an ej22E or an ej20t bottom end with the 2.5 heads? I've got a phase II dohc ej25 for reference. the plan was to buy a wrx engine and to frankenstein my 2.5 heads and manifold onto it.

so the question is, is it a question of power vs reliability, with the ej20t being less powerfull and more reliable than the ej22e setup, or are the internals of the ej20t stronger then those of the ej22e?

In my mind, it's not a matter of strength, but more of a matter of actual compatibility. It's been a couple years since I went through the process, but my conlusion was that the bore differential between the Ej20 and the Ej25 heads was too much and I didn't feel that it would make a good seal. You can go the other way and put Ej20 heads onto Ej25 bottom ends, but not the other way around. Others may tell you that you can do it, but I just didn't feel safe about it.

But putting an Ej22e bottom end under some Ej25 heads is a great set up. I've never built one myself, but have a couple of friends who have run that setup for years with no problems. And these aren't just little td04 builds. These guys are running big custom TEC Garrett turbos on them at anywhere from 14-18psi on a daily basis...

What do you look for when sourcing EJ25 heads? Are there any vendors out there that refurbish and warantee these? Kind of like Deadbolt does with the TD05?

Gosh darn, I love old threads, please do jump on them and start up when it makes sense...

Love you guys!

I will let you in on a little "secret". Subaru has a 'rebuilt' cylinder head program with a core exchange. So, you can bring in the most beat up piece of crap heads as cores and pay a couple hundred dollars and get fresh heads. And here's the kicker about it. Because they so overproduced the DOHC Ej25 heads when they were using them, you are actually buying brand new assembly line heads from the factory. These heads have not be rebuilt but are brand new. At least that was the case about a year ago when a friend of mine last purchased a set...

I've also got a set of Ej20H TT heads with manifold and injectors if someone is interested. I didn't really want to ship them, but if someone really wants a set PM me and we can discuss.

As for old threads? There's nothing wrong with old threads if is furthers the conversation But if it's just to sound smart or bump your post count, it's bad form...
