When the engine belched oil it ran fine.....

ok ej22t with 126k miles on it, when i bought it the valve covers were pinched and the oilpan gasket must have been factory cause it was leaking like a siv, but she ran good... just a quart every 50 miles or so... and man you will get some looks when it looks like your wagon is on fire in the middle of the gas station...

so i replace those gaskets and in the process break the middle valve cover bolt off. ok then, simply take off the rockers and replace that center metal block. well, when bolting that down, i break a couple of bolts off in the head... (sad when your so excited to run again that you misread torque specs....)

ok then, just gotta remove the broken bolts with a drill and easy out. first one is easy second time not so much... now I have two extra holes in my head... so i hope for the best and bolt it up anyway...

car sounds like crap... wont idle and if coaxed can stay alive but is extreemly noisy esp. from the passengers side where the extra holes are... as soon as i let go of the throttle it just dies...

wow i must have f*ed up real bad this time... i must have drilled into a water jacket and need to now replace the head... i get a fully loaded head and replacement goes pretty smooth with a new gasket from subaru and thanks to Legacy777 assembled completely by the book...

Set the timing precisely... car still runs like crap, same if not worse than the afore mentioned try... Check compression, my jaw drops... 1 125 2 175 3 110 4 175.... new head side is horrible... When looking at the pistions when the head was removed, the originaly factory honeing marks coulds still be seen, though there was one day i forgot to cover it... and some surface rust was evident after... i cleaned it right off with some pb blaster which supposedly is also a rust inhibitor as well.

Have I done something horribly wrong here? is there something i missed? or does god just not want me to have a running turbo?

I have been able to drive it for less then a month before i began work on it, but it ran fine before and i have no idea why the compression would drop off so sharply.

if anyone has any ideas or insights at all into this parradoxal misfortune please please speak up... im confused, but would love to get this car running again... but if i cannot it will become the nicest car that has to be parted out and a damn fine turbo to have to lose...

Thank You
Rob
