ok i work for a dealership right now, where i make $10.50 an hour, they have me cleaning the shop and doing a few oil changes here and there, and being dicked around being told i will get a raise and be a flat-rate tech soon, that was months ago.

i just got a job offer at a local performance shop that does all makes/models. the main installer quit and they asked my brother if he knew of anyone and he told them about me.

now they offered me starting $10 and hour, plus all the hours i want(which i am restricted on hours at the dealership), crazy discount on parts.

yes it is $.50 less, but i also have $33 a month on union dues and about $200-300 a month they take out for medical.

now ive always wanted to work in a performance shop/own my own shop sometime. i know there is a huge opterunity for me to make some serious cash at the shop, and wait a few more months and see what happends at the dealership, maybe go flat rate and right for the little work there is, or go with a dream of mine and have fun doing it.

im leaning towards the performance shop, because there are always jobs at dealerships.

Yeah dude my friend got dicked around for years at a dealership, even though he was an ASE certified master mechanic. Sometimes he went through a week where he got only a couple payable hours of work from his service writer, who was totally incompetent. Dealerships are constrained by corporate decisions, which usually make little or no sense at the mech level. You'll probably never get that flat rate promotion there...

The performance shop sounds much more promising, especially for rewarding good work.

I say stay at the dealership. Yes I know, there's a lot of bullshit that goes around at a dealership, I work at one right now, and worked at one before this.

BUT... both of those dealerships are still in business and making money.

I simply cannot tell you how many performance shops have opened and closed here in the past couple years.

That is true. But where's the sense of adventure in that? You might have to ask for your old job back if the shop tanks. There's risks in everything. That's why it's good to go out on a good note and give good notice.

You'd likely gain some knowledge and experience at the perf. shop. You want to own your own business some day. You're not going to learn much about business being a tech at the dealer, other than what you already know. You're not born into the family that owns it, so I see little chance for you to even be around the deals/decisions that go on upstairs. There might be opportunity for you to get your feet wet at the perf. shop.

Dealership = OEM experience.

But then again, I work at a Subaru Speed shop, which is really really fun.

well went in today and they put me to work, installed a greddy FMIC on an evo 8, and then goofed around the rest of the day, didn't think i would get paid but they tossed me a $50 when i was leavin and asked me when i could start, also i will go from about $1100 a month to about $2600. plus 40% off all parts.
