I have a stock NA 1994 legacy wagon that has a loud exhaust. I'm not sure of the terms used so here goes.

On each head there is a down pipe that feeds a Y that goes to the cat.

The right side down pipe leaks inside of the heat shield and can rotate on the Y and is very loud. The left side does not rotate and is quiet. (gaskets have been replaced)

Questions:

Where to get a replacement downpipe?
Is the whole assembly one piece?

I don't have a lot of money at this time and just mant it to be quite through this winter.

Just got a price for the 2 to 1 header pipe from my local Subaru dealer....

List is $591.16

One more follow up....

The 561 price is for the complete assembly. Headers for both sides, y plumbing and cat.

My car broke the header inside the heat shield where the 2 pipes from the head come to 1. This appears to be because the hanger after the cat is also broken and the weight of the cat caused flexing for thousands of miles.

I found a replacement in a junkyard in Gaston for $150 but it is too far away and closed on Saturdays.

So I pulled it off the car and drilled out the spot welds on the heat shields and welded the header back together with a wire feed that I have lying around. Sadly I'm not a welder so the welds look like crap. The heat shield is back on and tacked in place and a bit of bailing wire is supporting the aft end of the cat.

It is quiet now and who knows how long this will last. It appears that a good replacement would be to get an after market header and use that instead.

On an interesting note you can make the car run quietly in neutral and then put ont he gas to get it loud. More than one harley rider looked down at their bike to see if there was something wrong when I went by....

You already found out it's one piece, and you already contacted a junk yard which would have been my suggestion. Unless you wanted to go with something that performed a little better. You could probably find a cheap header on EBay for about $200.

If your a bit handy with the tools tho I would suggest going to a pull-it-yourself type of junkyard. I'm sure you can find what you are looking for very easily, and probably snag it for about $30.

And those welds probably won't last long. Weld and Cast don't really mix. I tried the same thing on my Legacy SS' up-pipe and it didn't hold for very long. Good luck tho.

Yea, $150 looked too much.

The header did not look case. It was welded pipe.

The NA y pipe is not cast. I had to reweld mine because it broke one side off the Y and it's been like that now for well over 30k miles. Personally once I need to replace mine i'm just gonna make one myself.

Yeah I'm not sure why I said cast. When I welded it, I tried doing it on the car. It was a pain-in-the-ass. I only got a few spot welds on there. And it was with a crappy welder. It didn't penetrate at all. Oh yeah I thought it was cast before I took the heat sheild off after I replaced it. It's not cast. Just the collectors are I guess.
