I am wondering where the serial number is located on my awd 4eat auto transmission. I need the number so that I can get the right VSS1 sensor for my tranny. All help is greatly appreciated! :)

Plate on Driver's side strut or on top of the tranny near where it mates with the engine.

The transmission has a model code sticker on it, on the bell housing. Its a little white label on the top side of the transmission where it meets the engine. It is on the same side as the starter, driver side in about the same area as that starter.

As stated above, the serial number VIN of the car is on the shock tower plate, but that is not always a good thing to go off of, as many times the trannys in our older Legacies arent the ones the factory put in them, do to rebuilds, swaps, upgrades, etc etc.

So find the sticker on the bell housing and give that info to the dealer.

He needs the tranny serial number. None of the plates will have this info.

I've been helping him with this issue. The parts book I have lists different things depending on the tranny serial number.

The white label is probably your best bet.

ok found it, the small label reads, 455865 then the other label reads TZ102ZA2AA-MH. oh and for legacy777 my car was manufactured on 08/92 or august 1992 I would presume.

EDIT: It should work, I go into why I think it should work at the bottom. Put on you're reading glasses.

Well....I don't have great news. The serial # & build date indicate that the rear rev. sensor (speed sensor 1) is part of the trans harness, or at least that's how I'm interpretting the info in the parts book.

Here are the scans for the rear extension housing.

You can see in the blow-up pic they show the two pics for the rev sensor. One for trans with serial #'s 411255 and below, and one for the trans serial #'s 411256 and above.

The ones for 411256 and above show a connector there, but they tell you to reference fig 193-2.

So if you go there, you see what looks to be the sensor, but no individual part #. So I really don't know if the sensor is just part of the harness, if it comes with the harness, or if it's just the same, and the book is stupid.

However I just check the part #'s and the part #'s for the transmission harnesses for serial # 411255 and earlier supercede to the same part # as transmissions with the serial # 411256 and later.

So....that would probably mean you can just order the sensor and it should work.

Stupid subaru......sorry for the long-winded explanation.

thanks for doing all of that digging for me, I have found some scans of so actual 4eat awd tranny's of my gen and the sensor is on the OUTSIDE of the tranny and is sealed by an o-ring to the inside and held on by the one bolt that is shown on the scans of the sensor. To replace the duty c solenoid the rear tail housing would have to be removed but to do the vss#1 its no more difficult than changing an awkward o2 sensor or so it would appear. I am going to order the sensor tomorrow from the dealer and maybe finally the car will be driving normally for a change :) . I have reset the TCU and ecu a couple of times and once the problem with the tranny shifting into neutral while driving went away for a day and everything was normal which shocked the hell out of me..lol. also at the time it was acting normal the power light didnt do the 16 flashes on startup either. but it still had the code 32 stored in the tcu after checking for previous problems, with the method on your site here for previous problems and what not. The other check just flashed the power light continuously at 1/2-1/4 second intervals which is supposed to be normal. That is the only code I have tho (32) so after I change this sensor out all should be gravy and from the sound of things I'm not the only person whos had this issue with their awd 4eat tranny either. But I guess 30o,xxx kms+ will help a sensor like that take a shit on you.

Anyways guys thanks fo rall of your help and hopefull ythis all works out for the best! :)
