Leaky gas tank

Hey guys/gals, forum community. I'm the proud new owner of a 93 Legacy LS (automatic, non-turbo sedan), and I thought I'd sign up here as the community sounds great! I wasn't sure where to post this, so if it needs to be moved, I apologize in advance. :D

The car runs great and I love it to death. There were a few problems with it when I bought it (I only paid $1,000 for it!), such as a leaky oil pan and the belts, but those were fixed (not by me.. I'm about as good a mechanic as I am a heart surgeon.).

The thing I'm looking at now is the gas tank. Whenever I fill the tank above half, it leaks. I took it into a shop and they filled the tank to see where it might be leaking. They found a leak up around the top. It does appear to be the tank itself though, and not a seal or anything.

What I'm wondering is if anybody knows what should be done. I've been looking around for a new tank, but I have had no luck at all. Does anybody know the part number of the tank? I could probably get a used one somewhere, but I'm hoping to find a newish one rather than one that could potentially break down soon after replacing it.

Anyway, thanks in advance to anybody who replies!

Welcome to the board and to Legacy ownership!

The tank in my 94 wagon rotted out right around the spouts where the filler and vent tubes attach to the tank (upper right rear corner). According to the dealership this is pretty common. Also according to the dealership a replacement tank is about $800cad and none of the aftermarket companies make a knock-off. What I did about mine was have the dealer lower the tank, clean up the rusty area and then fibreglass the snot out of it with longstrand fill. It sucked paying dealer labour rates for such a simple job... HOWEVER you have to unbolt half the rear end parts of the damned car just to lower the tank (same with yours if you have AWD) so I didn't have a place or tools to do it myself. Could have saved 100% of the cost on that one if I did :?

oh well, now she's not stinking and dribbling fuel everywhere so that's a plus!

I might have to try that out, I didn't realize what the cost would be!

Where abouts in NS you at? I just thought that was pretty weird that my first post ever gets a reply from someone from my home province :P

Are they sure it's not the fuel filler neck. It is common for dirt and junk to sit between it and the plastic guard, which causes it to rust out.

I'll have to actually see myself.. They just filled the tank up and noticed the leak coming from near the top. I'm hoping it's not the tank itself and just something a little smaller!

I definitely want to get it looked at before the snow starts falling too much.. Rust + road salt = Car not lasting very long.

hi guy i got some serious problem today as i order my gas tank bcuz its was leaking i got the part like few month ago today i had the money to install it so i went to mechanic after the guy drop all my car into piece to install it we notice that the tank was not the right one its for 2wd i guess all the other part seem to work on 4wd but not the tank i have paid like 570$ plus 140 duty tax and now i really dont know there policy about refinding i give them a call and they say they going to call me back.

i know i have told them that i had 4wd i always do bcuz i know part are different.

now my car is in mechanic the guy gonna look for repair it bcuz even if subarupart want to exchange it will take too much time its took me like 1 month to receive the tank the first time.

and just paying shipping to resend the wrong tank and pay shipping for the new one would be crazy and duty tax again ohh my god i dont wanna think about it

so just a good advice always make sure yu order the right part trust me.

so if anyone want a 2wd tank brand news i have one for sold.

Man, that's a bummer. How come you didn't just find a junkyard with the tank for dirt cheap? Even if it's not good you can just go back and exchange it for another one.

I would never pay that kind of money for a gas tank.

Maybe you can just return it and find one at a junk yard. I've seen whole legacys for sale for less than that maybe not running but you could get the tank off one and part out the rest of the car or sell it whole.

I wish I still had my imprezza to look but, wouldn't a gas tank from a newer subaru fit? Considering they are all AWD now and 15.9 Gallons.

Have you tried looking for a gas tank remanufacturing company? My friend got his 93's tank done for about $80, they welded all the leaks (17) and coated the thing in this thick black stuff. Took about 2 days from handing it over to getting it back. Just a thought.
