Popping out of 5th

I just got a 92 SS Legacy 5spd. I like it but the car doesn't like me...or rather doesn't like it's 5th gear.

For the most part I can shift into all the gear fine (sometimes 3rd will grind a bit) but when the car is in 5th and I let off the gas, it'll pop out of gear. I have no aspirations to tune the car, I just want a AWD winter beater/daily driver.

All the searches I have done mostly cover 4AT to 5MT swaps. Here are my questions.

1.) Has anyone had success fixing this by changing tranny fluid?
2.) Will a 90-94 N/A 5MT work as a swap?
3.) If there are no rebuild kits and a WRX replacement Tranny is going to be too expensive, what are my other options?

Thanks,

Stu

kinda sounds like your fith gears sincro's goin out.

the n/a 5spd would work but you would be going from hydrolic clutch to a cable. its alot of work but do able. also the turbo 5spd is 3.900 final drive. and the n/a is 4.111 so you would need to get the rear diffarental and some other misalanice things.

others with more experiance will fill in you other questions hopfully.

good luck :-)

I would try to find a direct replacement first, if I were you, it would mean much less work...and though more expensive, is far more worth it!

i agree. i would try and stay with the way your cars set up.

ive noticed that 4.11 gearing is pretty short.

IIRC the rear diff housings are the same for both GR...if you went to a 4.11 final you should be able to swap guts rather than changing the whole rear diff (probably cheaper...not necisarily less labor intensive).

I would personally stay with the 3.9 if its a daily driver.

My local junkyard has the N/A rear diff for $175 and plenty on N/A 5 spds for under $400. What else do I need for the swap?

I can't seem to find any Turbo 5 spd trannys out there.

The only other thing you should need is the clutch components as far as I know (pedal?, cable, fork). You'll proabably wanna throw a new flywheel at it (if you have the money) and a clutch kit (clutch disk, PP, bearings). There a lot of people selling flywheels and clutch kits on ebay. Got mine from a ebay company called grip force. Good service and fast delivery.

Nows a good time to decide if you wanna go with a lightened flywheel.

One thing you might notice (HELP ME OUT SS GUYS) is that NA transmission might not have a place to hook the heat shield that wraps around the turbo (not sure if it exists or not since I didn't use the heat shield in my swap, but if I recal there is a mount on the SS transmission).

Let us know if you decide to sell your used 3.9 rear diff.

lol. there not too shot but just about right. when i did my swap i used the stock flywheel and a used clutch from the junk yard.

yes im running a stock used clutch and it holds ok. it stats to slip in fourth gear and cant really hold 5th at full throttle, just slips. my tranny takes an every day beating, and it dosen't complaine, just dose what its told

i dunno about the heat shield thing becuase i nerver bothered to put it back on.
