Viral infection

Man, this sucks.

Saturday night, I started getting a headache and my neck started hurting. Didn't think anything of it and went to bed.

Sunday, same thing. Stayed in all day and moped around the house not wanting to do anything, then I did some things I had to do that night. As soon as I got back, the fever hit  My thermometer was messed up (really weird, stayed maxed out no matter what, even put a cube of ice on it and it wouldn't go down), so I didn't get a number, but I wouldn't doubt if it was 105º or more. Drank some juice and went to bed.

Slept worse than I'd ever slept in my life, that fever was f'ing with my head. I woke up every hour and I had to keep convincing myself that I was not wanted nationwide by the FBI. I'm not kidding. I would drink more fluid to try and keep the fever under control, and somehow managed to go to bed... for another hour.

7am Monday morning rolls around, and I call my boss and tell him I've got a high fever and can't make it into work. My boss is the coolest guy ever, so he wasn't upset, he just wanted me to feel better.

I do little else than sleep up until about 1pm, then I decided to inform my family. They said to make a doctor's appointment, which I did, and trudge down to the local drugstore and get some advice for what to do until then, as I still had a headache, still had a sore neck, and had a fluctuating fever. Pharmacist said to take one Advil and one Tylenol together for the pain, and of course drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest for the fever.

So I get that stuff, get a new thermometer while I'm at it, and get back home. Now I'm having all that, plus a strange feeling similar to indigestion. It was making it a little painful to fully inhale.

Fast-forward a couple hours. My fever is sitting right around 100º and not moving, but my head is still hurting worse, that indigestion feeling is getting worse, making it a little harder to breathe, and my extremities are starting to get cold. Call the family back up, and they suggest that I cover my chest in VapoRub and take an Ex-Lax before I go to bed. Within about 15 minutes of putting the VapoRub on, I start having serious breathing issues. It hurt to inhale, it hurt to exhale. And I was starting to get a little nauseous too.

My girlfriend called when she got out of class, and I told her what was going on. She insisted that she was coming over and not leaving, and if she had to, take me to the hospital. I told her I didn't want her to catch whatever it was that I had. But she's a Taurus, almost as stubborn as me, the Aries

Not 5 minutes after getting off the phone with her, my nausea gets the best of me, and I run to the bathroom and puke. Surprisingly, I feel somewhat better afterwards, and it's not as difficult to breathe. My girlfriend shows up, and refuses to leave, even though I tell her that I'm grossly sick and also contagious. God I'm lucky! :)

Anyway, I take the Ex-Lax about 10pm, and since I was sleeping all day, I wasn't reall sleepy. So we watched a movie together, and then went to bed.

4:30am, the Ex-Lax kicks in. I don't need to go into detail about that . I did feel a lot better again after that though.

I wake up at 7am, call my boss and tell him I had a doctor's appointment and would let him know what happened and if we're lucky, I can come in for a half-day of work.

10:45, I get to the doctor's office for my appointment, and at 11:45  I get in to see the doctor. I tell him the whole shebang, and as he pieces it all together, he sticks a thermometer in my mouth. Temperature was 101º . I didn't FEEL like I had a fever, but apparently I did. So he basically just concludes that I had some sort of "viral infection," that the best course of action was for me to stay home, rest, and drink lots of fluids, and that I wouldn't need any antibiotics or anything. But I was to let him know if any of the other symptoms came back.

So, here I am, sitting here in front of the computer, mostly rested, with a stomach full of fruit juice. :? Fever was 100.7º last I checked, and my head still hurts, just like it did Saturday night, with no complete relief :(

Cliff notes: Got a headache Saturday night, turned into a fever Sunday night, turned into breathing problems and violent oral and anal expulsion Monday night, and resting today and however much longer until my fever goes down.

What also sucks is that I bought a transmission for the 79, and it came in to my dealership Monday... with instructions from my boss to get it out of the warehouse ASAP :(

If you read this entire thing, you're either a saint, or just as bored as I am

Ah man, I'm sorry to hear all that. Sounds like it's been a pretty rough go. Wish I had some advice but nothing I can say you don't already know so I'll leave it at -

Hope you get better soon!

That's the worst thing about viral infections - you can't do much about them aside from tough it out. Just stay away from taking Advil on an empty stomach and you'll be good.

a friend who's husband works in an ER has told me numerous times don't ever complain of a sore neck and fluish like symptons in a hospital unless you want a spinal tap. they will think you have spinal meningitis

When I told my grandmother I had a headache for two days, she immediately asked if I had a neckache too, also suspecting meningitis. My doctor didn't mention anything about it, so I think I'm okay.

I took an Advil about a half-hour before I threw up; I wouldn't be surprised if that's what caused it.

Thanks for all the kind words guys... except you Imprezive  j/k

Spinal taps are definitely wierd. I can't say it was painful, just really uncomfortable. What Monty said is exactly what happened to me. No meningitis though. Just the viral crap. You talk really wierd when you have a fever over 105. I guess I explained how to play Monopoly and how I was sorry for filling out my taxes. Over and over. And elephants drop babies so don't give them any.

The really wierd thing was how I became temporarily allergic to chlorine during and after the whole ordeal. Kinda sucked because I had a job lifeguarding at a pool. I got "hives" all over and my fingers swelled to the size of hot dogs. It felt like I had a whole pack of rubber gloves on each hand. That had me freaked out most of all. I just avoided going in the water unless needed and it went away about a month later.

Damn, and once you got over it you were okay with chlorine again?

I went to bed Sunday night, and I can't remember exactly what I was dreaming, but I just know there were a shitload of guns involved. And yeah, every hour I woke up, I had to calm myself down and convince myself that I was just laying there in my bed and that I wasn't wanted in 15 states. It was fuckin trippy.

Feeling a shit-ton better. Haven't had a fever all day. I've still had a headache though, and since I did in fact have a fever when I went to bed last night, I played it safe and called in to work, just to be safe.

The doctor said to see how I feel tomorrow, and if everything seems to be okay, that I can go back to work.

So, I should be all right. I'll keep you all updated, and thanks so much for the kind words!

That sucks dude.....glad you are feeling better.

I've been battling this shit I got in Japan up until last week or so.

I had two rounds of anti-biotics, and a second time of getting sick.....it sucks big time!!!

Went to class today, got caught up.

Went to work, felt a little slow and groggy for the first couple hours, but by about 4pm, I started feeling a whole lot better, my headache mostly went away, and my temperature was still staying down.

Despite instructions from my family to eat a light dinner, I had to have a lasagna :D. The first real meal I've had in almost a week!

So, looks like I got it kicked. Again, thanks for the moral support guys!

Has your ailment put you out of work too Josh?

three cheers and a beer for feeling alright

I've been coughing up lung-butter since late september and it's almost over now!

Lung batter? You mean pneumonia? I had that too. Really, really not fun.

Glad to hear you're well Sub. I hate being sick, especially wierd crap like that.

And yes, I'm cool with chlorine now. I can actually say I was allergic to my job. How many people can legitimately say that??

Not really, the cough was more of a nusiance then anything. There was a day or two where I felt like shit, but still had to get some things done. The worst is when you're traveling and sick. That sucks big time! I was in Atlanta when my throat got all nasty. I just wanted to go home.

Son of a dirty whore.

Picked up a sore throat Monday...

... still have it today

Decided to look inside my mouth last night in a mirror... tonsils are all swollen and covered in white spots.

So, it appears that I have strep throat. It's getting so bad I don't even want to eat, and as a result, I'm feeling pretty worn down. It's gonna be a struggle to make it to the end of the day.

When I woke up with it this morning (which I was 100% sure I would) I called the doctor again, and I now have another appointment tomorrow morning, and will likely miss work again for the whole day tomorrow.

One thing that I'm really glad about is that school is finished for the semester. I'm not glad that I could potentially fail two classes , but I'm at least glad that it's all done. So now, I can just sit around the house, do nothing, and hopefully recuperate.

If I can keep myself from taking the transmission out of the 79 like I was planning to this weekend

Well, this is either the toughest case of strep throat ever...

... or it's something worse

I've been taking penicillin since Friday, as the doctor prescribed. He said I should see significant improvement by the end of the weekend, which is today. Granted, the day is not over, and I still have two more penicillin pills to take for the day, but I see no real improvement.

Throat is STILL sore, tonsils are still covered in white spots, and I still feel just blah.

If I feel this way tomorrow, I'm gonna have to go back to the doctor, and he'll have to arrange for a blood test, and I'm pretty sure I know what they'll tell me.

"Oh, I'm sorry sir, you have mono, and you'll have to stay home from work for the rest of the month."

Mono is the only other thing it can be.

mmm, doesn't sound like mono at all. I'm guessing it's some obscure virus. I had something very similar to this a while ago, and it lingered quite a while. My parents suspected mono as well, but since my midsection wasn't in pain and I didn't feel terribly weak, I didn't think it was. And it wasn't.

Well, turns out it WAS mono! I saw the doctor last Monday, did a blood test, got the results back on Tuesday, and that's what it was.

I didn't get it from my girlfriend, as she never had it and has been medically confirmed to not have it as of October 23rd. So I probably picked it up somewhere without knowing it (I could have gone to a restaurant and eaten off a fork that wasn't washed properly, for all I know, as gross as that sounds).

So, my grandparents brought me down to South FL and nursed me back to health. I've been basically doing little else than laying in bed and wasting time since Tuesday, and I've basically gotten over it to the point that I was allowed some extra activities today, including walking to the computer room and going online.

I just spent 20 minutes cleaning out my email inbox

Anyway, I should return to Orlando Tuesday, and go back to the doctor Wednesday for a checkup, and then if all is well, return to work Thursday.

Mono sucks, I had it when I was younger and it laid me out for a few weeks with 105 temperatures and hallucinations too. I never liked Tim Conway after his huge Dorf head came at me when I was sick.
