VSS progress?

Post by isotopeman »

Well, I put a reed switch and 4 magnets on one of the axles in place of the reed switch in the speedo. I took a guess at how many revolutions the VSS magnet housing makes per revolution of the axle/wheel.
With 4 magnets, the car would shift at no less than 3500 rpm. That seemed way too high, so I added 4 more magnets, evenly spaced, between the other 4. I'm not sure if it's too many or too few.
The car now shifts into 2nd at 8mph, and into 3rd at 18 mph. It never shifts into 4th though. I've takend it up to 80mph, and it stayed in 3rd.
The early shifting into 2 and 3 tells me that I have too many magnets. The lack of shifting into 4th tells me the opposite. Is the timing for the shift into 4th determined differently than the timing for the other shifts? I'm probably going to just cut the wire to the reed switch on the axle to get decent mileage again. 22mpg just sucks.
Has anyone else figured out a way around a broken speedo cable drive in the transmission yet?
Cruise control would be nice to keep, but not at the expense of fuel economy.
Thanks.

I don't know the amount of pulses that the speedo puts out.

The torque chip & I believe pro-ecm can elminate top speed limits by feeding a fake signal to the VSS, however I do think they rely on an initial signal sent to it.....so that may not work either.
