so i picked up this 94 impreza wagon a while back. the car is going to be my rallyx/gravel road beater.... and i'm trying to figure out what to do with the motor.

i have a phase2 2.5 block that i could just drop in between the 1.8 heads and have a higher comp 2.5

i have a rotated turbo kit setup i could stick on the 1.8.

or the 3rd option i've been toying with (but i have no $$ for) is drop some STi pistons and rods into the 2.5 block and put the rotated setup on it with a vf39 or something similar (not really feasible but it would be fun as hell  )

all would be run off of the 1.8 ecu with a greddy emanage blue.

so... what do you guys think?

I dont think the ej25 block will work with ej18 heads but I could be wrong. would be crazy high compression if it did, like low 12's. trade the phase 2 block for a phase 1, put some cheap ej22 heads on and call it good.
what heads do you have that you could put on the ej18 block to turbo it?

yeah, i was wondering about that too but i have na and turbo 2.2 heads... so i could use either sets of those also. for turboing the 1.8 i have some phase1 2.5 DOHC heads in iffy condition, some t-leg heads, the stock 1.8 heads, n/a 2.2 heads, and i think thats it....

i'm not really looking for a crazy power car... just something with decent torque for some gravel/dirt fun. i'm kind of leaning toward putting the turbo kit on the 1.8 for now and when the 1.8 blows or i get tired of it i'll swap in the 2.5 and convert it back to NA.

Very soon, I will find out whether EJ205 heads will work on an EJ18. I haven't given up on my project yet.

Remember, then EJ18 is the same as any other Phase I engine, just the bore is different.

There is ONE big problem with EJ18s though: They don't have knock sensors
