CV Joint Noise

Hello Everyone,

I've got a 91 Subaru Legacy, Auto, and FWD. I'm used to working on RWD cars and this is all pretty new to me, hopefully some of you experts can answer my questions!

I've been noticing a clunking noise coming from my front driver’s side wheel. My thought was that it's the CV joints; from searching the forum I’ve found that’s probably the case.

The clunking is really noticeable when accelerating while turning a corner. It’s getting worse as time goes on.

The clunking has started to be accompanied by a sort of whistling noise as well. It sounds like it could be a vacuum leak, but I haven’t checked into it (idle is rock solid). I'm wondering if this higher pitched issue usually comes up with the worn CV joint, or if it’s a separate problem.

What is the best way to check if the cv joints need replacing?
As far as replacement goes can someone explain what parts are involved? I hear alot about only replacing the "half Shaft", how do I know which part needs to be replaced?

Thanks in advance guys!

BTW: is there a write-up on the internet about replacing cv joints?

Well, did you inspect the boot of the CV to see if it is broken? That is usually what happens.

$25 used from a u-pull it. about an hour to change one out, if you don't know what you are doing. Search for instructions, they are here!
