well if you used rubber bands for tires you could run like a 23.

17x7 with 215s is about the biggest people go without problems. Actually some people have rubbed with 205/55-16s on WRX wheels, some people have gone 225s on a 7.5" wheel.

It depends how low your car is. You will have trouble lowering your car much if you've got 17x7's.

I'm toying with the idea of finding some 16x7.5 or 16x8 wheels, because what you really want is contact patch not largest diameter

Common places to rub are the lower spring perch and inner fender lip. I ran 17x7's w/ 225/45/17 tires and they rubbed like crazy with the stock suspension.

Like jamal said, if you run a 215 series tire you should clear the fender/strut.

But I ran 225/45/17's on 17x7.5" rims and didn't really rub at all.

The rear of the car also held 235/45/17 Toyo Proxes RA1's without much rubbing.

Was that with stock struts? When I had my stock suspension there was barely any room between the spring perches and WRX tires.

Then when I did the STi suspension swap they rubbed slightly (although I could only tell from the marks on the tire) until I put in rear camber bolts. Now I'm pretty confident I could fit a 225 with little or no fender rolling as there is plenty of room between the strut and tire since the perch is up higher.

I think an 18 with a very thin tire. I believe there are people that run 225/35/18. I know from research that 225/45 rubs...but a rim's offset can make a difference.

Also, the stiffness of your suspension. If your suspension has gotten really soft over the years (for any number of reasons), you will not be able to run as large a rim/tire than if they are still nice and stiff (or if you have stock height, but more stiff am springs you could go slightly larger).

One may also argue that larger rollbars could allow for a slightly larger rim/tire due to the decreased body roll...but that'd be extreme...and speed bumps would not be your friend.

On AGX's for a GC Impreza, it cleared the 235's.

48 is the offset. et is a german abbreviation or something.

wow, I would have thought the fender was gonna cause the problem. That is good info. What springs were you using?

Do you guys think that a 235/40/17 tire would clear on a 17x7 wheel with 48 offset. The car has KYB gr-2's. I'm about to put wrx springs on as well.

Compared with what other people have said above, I do think it would fit.

That being said, I would be more concerned with running a 235 on a 7" wide rim...that's gonna be a squeeze on there.

If you are just going for a look, then go for it. If you are wanting better handling, you'd be better off with a 225/40.

18" shouldn't give problems...

Our Legacy is equal to the GC Imprezas. I know a lot of people driving with 18" on their GC. Even when they lowered the car

I even know one, who drives a GC with 19" and an offset of 35 But his car is completly rebuild for those wheels

no...235 on a 7" wide rim is a bad idea.

I borrowed a set of 17x7's with 215's on them and they rub. After that experience, there's no way I'd try 235's on my car.

What was the offset of those wheels???

17x7 with offset 48-53 won't be a problem...

There's a set of rims on ebay real cheap. They're 17x7 but only have a 40mm offset. The less the offset, the further they stick out, right? If so, 40mm wouldn't be enough.

I would say on a stock height, stock strut legacy a 16" would be max. I put some aluminum rims (from a Pontiac) on my legacy, and with a 205 50 R16 tire, its literally a couple MM away from the bottom spring perch on my struts. funny coincidence, GM 5 lug rims (Pontiac, cavalier, etc) fit perfectly on the legacy... found that out when I killed two rims on my first legacy (my project now) , and the grand am steel rims fit perfectly. the aluminum ones from the newer grand ams have a farther out offset, so the tires/rims look to fill the wheel wells a tiny bit better. (they do NOT stick outside the fenders, just for reference)
