Pulling a rollcage is a b*tch

So yesterday and today (I only work part-time because i go to "skool") I was in charge of pulling a Spec 6-point rollcage out of one of the miata's at my work. I had to pull it because the car's frame wasn't straight before they installed the cage, and had been in numerous race related fender benders since then.

My weapons:

Air powered cutting wheel
Electric grinder
A hammer
Sawz-all (spelling?)

I cut it into pieces of course, there was so much tension on the cage that on one cut the cage rebounded about an inch away from the other portion of tubing it was previously connected to.

4.5 hours, a few sawz-all blades, a couple cutting discs, and a fat chunk of my fingr later the cage was out and all the welds had been smoothed out.

man what a bitch....

cliff note: a lot of effort goes into installing AND uninstalling rollcages...

I happen to have a miata, and I have seen pics of miata installed roll cages - EVERYTHING is super tight with the fitment....

I love taking things apart though - even more so when I dont have to put it back together.... :-D

nope, the car goes to the body shop today to get straightened. The thing with a plasma cutter is you cant make it all the way around the tubing that is welded into a corner.
