Sad Departures, New Arrivals...

Well, Mark Costa was the last guy to see me around... I've been back from college since last May, and have gotten a job at a local Office Depot. Still had my Legacy, she was still running great. I'd make monthly sojourns up to Rochester to visit friends and hang out, things were going pretty well.

Then, on January 9th, I was out trying to get some cheese to make a pizza... and some idiot in a green sedan came up around a corner eating half of my lane. I swerved right, but the rear end came out and I did a 180 into the ditch. And that was that.

Insurance was quick to write the car off, saying it was worth $1434 but a complete repair would be $2800. Damn. And originally they told me that they'd also put a salvage title on it--but later I discovered that this was not the case. A minimum estimate to just get the car fixed up was about $1100... bleh.

So at that point, my options were to either find a used car I could afford, fix the Legacy, or take my dad's offer and buy his Ford Contour SE from him for $3500. I really didn't want that--I don't like how that car feels and $3500 was a bit steep.

I went to Mark Mann's and told him about the situation, and he asked if he couldn't get me into another Subaru. I told him I'd love another Subaru, but most--if not all--were out of my price range. So he let me test drive a '96 Legacy (my first AWD driving experience!), and that felt pretty good. Still too expensive, though. He went down to the dealer and drove my car (I love how you can wreck a Legacy and still drive it... boggles my mind) back up to his place to give it a look.

And that is when a rather... interesting offer came my way.

'92 SVX LS-L for $3500, trading the Legacy in towards repairing the shot wheel bearings. It had about the same amount of miles on it that my car had, but it was worse for wear. Dents abound, dirty on the inside... but mechanically it was fine, and aside from the right-front fender it was rust-free. So I talked it over with my folks...

And now it's sitting in my garage. Needs some serious work--like, brand new wheels and tires, and I have to fill the currently empty center console with a new SVX radio cage and the Alpine system from my Legacy... but it's an absolute blast. Driving it home was awesome--I got looks at stoplights, and despite having totally ruined tires it drove confidently. I think I'm gonna have a lot of fun with this little project car.

She ain't a Legacy... but maybe someday when I have a more secure financial situation, I'll be able to find that pristine '91 SS I'd always wanted. Until then, peace out LegacyCentral.

P.S. SVX guys don't know what an "SS" is.

P.S.S. Sucks about THAWA's server, I think I lost a bunch of pics..

Some of us know what SS is :-D

I saw a thread about this on the SVX board - congrats on the buy. They're good cars, aside from trannies and wheel bearings.

Fortunately the trannies and wheel bearings are little things, like how if you replace the wheel bearings properly they last just fine, and how if you add an external filter and cooler to the transmission it lasts too... :P

And I dunno, it just struck me as odd when one of the guys on the SVX board was all, "Nobody calls that car an SS." I just kinda chuckled on the inside, you know?

First, nice SVX, though personally, I wouldn't have paid more than $2000 for it.

Second, say what you want about Tom, but when it comes to the SVX, he knows his shit. He diagnosed my girlfriend's old SVX over the phone in 3 minutes, and we later found it to be the case. Nice guy too, he even offered to come over from Jersey and fix it for her.

I think you'll find that a vast majority of the folks over on the SVX board are real nice and helpful.

Oh, no no no. I'm not badmouthing their skills. It was obvious within the first few minutes of browsing the SVX boards that these guys know their shit just like you guys do. I was really worried that the SVX community didn't have a Vikash or Mann to their name, but I found that the community is in very good hands.

All I'm saying is, I came from the Legacy boards to the SVX boards... so hearing someone say "nobody calls it an SS" was shocking. :lol:

Was your car a Sandstone Metallic? I can't really tell the color, but if it was, that's just one less Sandstone Metallic - we don't have many left these days (I thought Josh and I were the only ones who had them).

Yes, sadly, it was a Sandstone Metallic--my car started life exactly as Josh's did--they were like twins. Then Josh went and did all that M/T and AWD and Turbo converting and I stayed stock... :roll:

Fortunately, it's in good hands. Mark Mann now owns the car, and intends to fix it up and--I'm guessing--get it back into sellable condition. Maybe it'll go to another BC lover, eh?
