I'm looking for a complete 5sp swap for my 91ss auto.

Here's a list of the parts I think I'll need

Transmission
Flywheel
Clutch
Pressure Plate
Front Driveshaft section
Entire shifter assembly
Clutch and brake pedals, cables
Clutch master cylinder and reservoir (for hydraulic systems)
Transmission crossmember

Please pm me if I'm missing something on my list.

You will need the 5mt starter also, they are different than the 4eat's.
I have an n/a 3.90 5mt swap set-up, less the pedals and trans crossmember, located in PA.

Bart, are the tranny's the same n/a to turbo? I've heard that the turbo tranny's don't hold very much power so I'd imagine the n/a ones are even weaker.

Prices, mileage?

Trannies aren't the same, but I wouldn't worry about it. We've discussed it in several threads and basically, yes the turbo is stronger, but both will break if you abuse them.

I'd go with the NA just because if you break it, it's cheaper to buy a NA tranny and they're easier to find. Chances are too that they haven't been abused as much.

why not use a wrx tranny then? They are plentiful.

The n/a trannies are 4.11 - turbo are 3.90 - not sure about autos.

Whichever one you get, you need to make sure your rear end matches.

The subaru transmissions are all of the same basic design. People break gears because they abuse the tranny (or its just plain worn out). The gears break when the tranny flexes - not because the gears are necessarily "weak".

The turbo tranny I believe has cryo treated gears (someone correct me if Im wrong). This will probably not make much of a difference if the tranny is abused - the case will flex and you will break gears....

The wrx trannies are expensive and tend to have been abused. Even if "said" transmission was not abused, it had much more hp running through it than a turbo legacy or n/a legacy. I would stick with a tranny that came out of a lower hp car....

No, both 5 speed trannies are 3.90.
Only automatics were 4.11.

Not sure abou cryo-treatedness.

Wrx tranny would be a better solution yet, but it's a much more expensive option, and unless you feel like spending lots of money, isn't worth it.

If money isn't a concern, get a built wrx box from gearboxtech.com or get a sti 6 speed.

Still vote for the na 5 speed though.

Not true...only Turbo Legacies had 3.90...

Every other 1st Gen had 4.11

The turbo gears are shot peened and case hardened...

Even FWD 5 speeds are 4.11? I could have sworn I was 3.9. My bad, I guess you learn something new every day.

I'm sorry, but you're all wrong.

All FWD's have a 3.70 final drive ratio, AT & MT
90-94 MT n/a Legacies have 4.111 final drive ratio
90-91 AT n/a Legacies have 4.111 final drive ratio
92-94 AT n/a Legacies have 3.90 final drive ratio
91-94 MT & AT turbo Legacies have 3.90 final drive ratio

Did all turbo legacy's come with LSD front and rear? If not, did the 91?

Josh, can we get that info stickied in the drivetrain thread? I had searched before, but never found anything like that.

And no, not all turbo legs had rear LSD. The 91's did. This I know for sure. Don't know about front diff. Pretty sure none of them had front LSD.

None came with front LSD's as mentioned, and only the 91 came with the rear VLSD.
