New Coil/Wires/Plugs STILL Arcing - Update on Bogging Thread

Ok, I have another post regarding my on going hesitation and bogging on my 94 SS.

http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=30496

If you've followed my progress on this....here is my dilema now.

First of all. I replaced a few of the grounds under the hood tonight with some 4AWG wire and ring terminals. Right now I've done the battery to core support and battery to transmission. I also cleaned up the grounds on the driver's side by the strut mount.

After I test drove and the car was really seeming to run better (it always runs pretty good when its cold since I've been replacing stuff).

After a nice 12 mile spirited drive my bogging/hesitation came back. Seems not as bad but there is still something wrong with this car. So, I pull it in the garage and its doing its normal hot idle slight miss.

I pop the hood just to see how my ground were doing and I noticed that my brand new Diamond Coil was arcing in the EXACT same place as the orignal (which is why I replaced it). Then I happened to notice that I came produce this arc NOT ONLY on the coil but I can get a nice blue spark out of a wire on either side of the coil by snapping the throttle (now this only works most of the time).

So, now this car has completely thrown me for a loop. Because I'm assuming this ignition problem (which I thought I had fixed with the new parts) is my slight idle miss and hesitation/bogging problemo.

I just find it hard to believe that the first set of wires (that came on it), a set off a parts car I pulled, and the new wires would be bad. I also find it really hard to find that all three of the coil packs that I have had on this car (including the brand new latest model Diamond coil - which is on there now) are bad.

Anyone, guys/gals, ladies/gents have ANY idea or clue why I might still be seeing this arcing on the coil and wires after what I have replaced? Because I just do NOT get it....haha

I forgot to mention regarding the arcing. It is a faint arc right in the middle of the front of the coil pack. I can not tell if it is jumping from thr metal "magnet" (that surrounds the plastic) to the intake or from the "magnet" to the plastic piece itself.

I'm kinda wondering if it couldn't be the new wires that are creating the coil to arc. The are the cheap Autozone brand but new none the less. I don't see them as an issue because the only arcing I am seeing at idle would be from that coil. Now, this blue illuminating spark from the wires when I snap the throttle is definitely something new because I can't see my missing that before.

I dont claim to be an expert, but crappy spark plug wires have been known to cause issues w/arching on other cars...

Well THANKS for the help everyone!

I somehow managed to catch the car on fire working on it in my garage. It went up in flames under the hood. I ran in the house to call 911. 10 minutes later the fire dept came to put it all out.

Everything under the hood is just melted to shit. The front of the car is metled (nothing left). The winshield/dash/interior are either melted, smoke damaged or water damaged.

I'm going to assume that the perfect shifting 4EAT is stiill good minus the wiring. But I dont think I am going to piss with removing anything. I might try to siphon the full tank of gas out for my SVX. Take a couple things (maybe) and get my friend with the F350 dually to come down and haul it to the recylcing yard. Sad it does seem someone might be able to put it back together if they had say a car with a rotted frame but Im just going to junk it. Ill haul it to the scrap yard next week.

Dude, I dont even know. 27 cars I've owned in 3 years +/- almost every one I have had to do minor to extensive work and nothing like this has remotely happened.

As far as putting the fire out. I wish I would have tried.....because that is the pnly one of my three cars that I only carried liability on (year/miles). And I'm just quite certain that homeowners ins will have nothing to do with this situation (if anything my car insurance would cover the garage). Well, Hell I did not only make the 6 oclock news but the 11 oclock news too......haha

I really thought for some reason the car was gonna blow up. And I had my SVX and our Mountaineer parked within 6 foot either direction of this blazing car. My first thought after calling 911 was to move them away from the car in the garage out of the driveway before the fire dept got here.

Wow, sorry to hear about that. I think my first thought would have been to get the flaming car out of the garage into the driveway, though....

My first thought would be to throw a wet rag ontop of the fire, close the hood, and turn off the car so if the fuel lines melted, it wasnt pumping gas into the bay...

Shitty deal dude

At least you're not hurt

The car was not running at the point when it caught on fire. Still not sure what caused it but im pretty sure it was something I had done....so I really dont even want to think about it.

I never thought to close the hood. Maybe if I had done that the damage might have been minimized but I'm doubtful because it went up in flames under the hood rather quick.

I've found that a leaking fuel injector can lead to a damn fire under the hood. Though the first fire on my SS was of a cause unknown, and the second was when the engine blew, actual cause unknown, the third was caused by an injector leaking from the upper o ring

DON'T junk the block!!!!!!!

Yank it and sell it!

I got $900 just for the closed deck case alone!

While I doubt you will get this, that block is worth money!
