Ok so I'm just turning 16 and my aunts giving me a 1991 legacy wagon AWD non turbo. I want to convert it to a turbo spending the least needed. any suggestions because im kind of new at this

#1 suggestion: Use the search feature to find other peoples threads from similar projects and read about what they did.

#2 suggestion. Sell it and buy a turbo one.

#3 suggestion: learn to drive it first, then worry about more power.

That said...stock NA Legacies can still be a LOT of fun! Focus your efforts in suspension and brakes...then deal with power later...

Welcome to the Subaru world, you'll never go back. You'll be super happy with your AWD.

And not to sound like we're all beating on you but, honestly, learn to drive first before worrying about the power.

It takes a lot of experience before you really learn how to handle a car. And until you know how to handle it, all more power is going to do is get you into an accident. Do your brakes and your suspension and learn how to drive good lines and your NA will scoot.

Dont be in a rush to spend all your money. Used brake setups with lots of life can be had on the cheap. Watch this site and "NASIOC" (www.nasioc.com) for used brakes. WRX front and rear brakes will be an upgrade for you. Later down the road, you can swap for vented rear brakes, but stock wrx brakes from any year should be fine - its what I have and I find them to be great.
They are also bolt on....

Everyone has a different taste when it comes to suspensions. I still think my Legacy needs a lift!!! Again, search nasioc for 04+ wrx suspensions. Should be bolt on. Will be a definate improvement.

As much as you want a turbo, and as much as I wanted a fast car when I was 17, its just not a good idea. You can kill yourself with the power you have now, wait a year or two until you know the car and then add power.

I have been driving for 7 years, I had a go kart since I was 13, and Ive been racing shifterkarts for the past 3 seasons. I am STILL learning how to drive, and after 3 months of owning the legacy, I am STILL learning how it reacts to different input/driving conditions.

The search button is a VERY useful tool. Theres a lot of info buried in this forum - I would suggest you start reading!!!

although to be honest, I didn't buy the turbo leg for the power, i bought it for all the cool sounds it makes. Although be prepared to fill the tank with premium every 350km

That is even better than my first subi. I had an 86 GL wagon 5spd 4X4 with 235,000 miles on it. Man great times!! Don't rush yourself out of that car, grown in it first.

WRX rear brakes are the same size as the legacy wagons.....so you don't need to swap the rears.

This is true, but chances are, that the brakes on a 91 legacy wagon probably arent up to snuff anymore... If he finds a good complete set from a wrx - theres no point in not swapping in the newer stuff....
