Hello once again guys...I have a quick question. Even though I've sold my Legacy, the new owner wants me to replace the starter for her. I looked at the Haynes manual and it says its held in by two bolts. My question is, do I need to get under the car to replace it or can I reach both bolts from the top? By the way, I really miss my Legacy.

You should be able to get to it from the top.

Not sure what's wrong with the old, but I've had better luck with just replacing the contacts in the starter solenoid than with buying aftermarket reman units.

Thanks for the reply. The old one has a really bad dead spot and I really wouldn't know where to start to replace the contacts. I take it they are on the inside of the starter?

True. Dead spots are usually from the brushes being worn out internally. You can get to it faily easily from the top. During the engine pull I remeber that it came out pretty easy compaired to other cars I have done it on. *Cough* american cars... Good luck

Yeah, with my Legacy it was real easy going from the top.

I once had to replace the starter on a '93 Corsica, in a parking lot, at night, in the rain, all while underneath the engine, with the car being supported only by two jacks (not the brightest thing I've done, but had no choice. The starter, once I finally got it loose fell straight down, and if it weren't for the wires still being attached probably would've broken my damn nose. Since then, I will not touch another GM 3.1L, or any other piece of shit domestic
