hello all,

i have a 91 leagcy sport sedan, turbo, auto trans, and i wonder if i could get a little help figuring out what to do about some trouble codes. while driving, i sometimes geta brief CEL, and don't notice any drivability problems, car seems fine, then the light goes off. also, occasionally it will just die, and i have to turn the key off and restart it.

i pulled the codes using the procedure from this site (very easy, great write up by the way) and got 24, 35, and 44. I think the car dieing is probably 24, the air control valve, but what do the others mean? i searched the site, and could only find that people don't always replace the canister purge solenoid valve, and that it is hard to do. how important is replaceing the part, and how hard is it? Also, what about 44, which appears to be something related to the turbo wastegate? what problems could it cause, and should i replace it?

thanks in advance.

In regards to the 35:

It is a major PITA to replace. I broke a few things getting to it. Finally, I relocated it to the top of the manifold on the bolt to the left of the coil pack.

I ran around for 2 months with code 35. Didn't affect the operation of my legacy, but made my garage smell like gasoline.

I had those exact same codes. I'm pretty sure that was the problem I solved when I replaced the "ignition relay". The ignition relay is a swich that supplies power to all those things, so sometimes if the relay goes bonkers all those parts don't work right and throw error codes.

Here is the part number for the relay:
25232AA020

It's located under the dash on the driver's side, but way the heck up in about as inconvenient a place as possible. I wish I could find the old threads about it, but this new google search is not doing it for me.

If that doesn't work, then you can start replacing the boost control solenoid, idle air control solenoid, and canister purge control solenoid, but I would try the ignition relay first since that'll probably solve all 3.

FYI this is what they are:
24 Air control valve. This is how the computer controls the idle speed. It sends an electrical signal to this valve, which opens or closes it to let more or less air into the engine. This code is a pain in the neck, because the computer goes into "fail safe" mode and cuts fuel to your car whenever you get on the gas.

35 Canister purge valve. This doesn't seem to cause any problems - most people ignore it. The canister stores any gas that evaporates from your gas tank while it's parked. Then, once the car is running, the computer opens this valve and lets the stored gas into the engine to burn (which is better for the environment then what old cars did - which was let the evaporation leak into the atmosphere).

44 Duty solenoid valve. What a confusing name. The computer opens and closes this valve to control the wastegate, and therefore the boost.
