fuel economy Fixs

ok, I have been reading for the past 2 hours trying to find something. But really all i found was how bad the Turbo's fuel economy.
I want to hear from the people that have HAD bad fuel economy and now have better. What they found to be wrong and what they did to fix it.
Sry but if our an N/A i dont care. Turbos have SUPER bad fuel economy where the N/As are just bad.
Im getting 16mgp 17 if im lucky and going down hill all day.
I dont know why but i got better fuel economy going 140km then 110km.
I have no engine lights. New oil every 4000km Full Syn, New sparks, new leads. No dimond coil packs tho... New tires with higher pressure, Clean K&N drop in.
Its about $60CDN right now for me to fill up and at 1/2 tank im at about 150km... I want to cry

Just wondering is your knock sensor cracked?

I have a 1993 Turbo Wagon and I get roughly 14mpg, 16 on a good week. My car is bone stock.
I replaced my O2 sensor and i got maybe 10 extra miles a tank, but not enough to jump for joy. I recently removed my snorkus and soon I will install an intercooler and see if maybe that will help any.

I used to get about that, but since I tamed my right foot and replaced my canister purge solenoid, I have been getting at least about 19 or 20 with mixed city/highway driving (about 22 with just highway).

please speak more of this canister purge solenoid. What is it. Where do i get a new one. How do i know if its not working

Mine started giving me a CEL when it wasn't working right. Doesn't seem to affect driving any, though.
It is the solenoid under the intake manifold visible between the 1 and 3 runners. It connects the charcoal canister to a fitting on the throttle body.
Also, try cleaning the MAF sensor. If you put the K&N right in, it may be gunked up a bit, since K&N over-oils their filters from the factory.
Also, try replacing the o2 sensor. I know mine was pretty much toast when I replaced it and wasn't getting a CEL.

When i bought my 93ss i got barely 12mpg. Had a nasty fuel leak at the fuel filter, replaced it and shot up to 17ish. When i got my td04 and IC and 3" turboback i actually noticed it increase again up to 18-20 city (so long as i dont boost everywhere). This was amid all the usual tuneup stuff, plugs, wires, air filter, confirmed good coil pack, canister purge, knock sensor, coolant temp, known good IAC, cleaned MAF, replace bad bearings/dragging pads. I also noticed my wideband o2 sensor gave me another small increase.
I can get her to 24-25 highway w/ cruise @75

cruise? What's that?
I just filled up today. 20.8x with about half highway and half city with a bit of fooling around.

How can you get such a bad mpg? I had 29 in the city and 32 highway at 80mph. The best I ever got was 40mpg at 45mph on the interstate.

That was before I installed complete aftermarkert exaust and before the engine started burning oil. Now I get 25/29 mpg with visible smoke from the tail pipe. Exaust bumped up the highway mileage by 1.0 mpg without any affect on city driving. Underdrive pulley helped by 0.5 mpg, K&N AF - 0.5 mpg, synthetic oil - 0.5 mpg, lowering oil's weight to 5w20 - 0.5 mpg. Tornado, magnetic fuel saver, engine and O2 sensor ground mod, all that was not significant, but could have contributed to my gas mileage. I also do fuel system cleaning every 5000 mi. I keep city mpg up by avoiding unneccessary braking and accelerating. I choose a constant speed for each road and stick to it, +/-1 mph. If someone hits brakes in front of me, I change the lane.

the idea in the city is a good idea, alot of people gun it then hit the brakes, why not just idle slowly up to the person? not like your getting there faster in bumper to bumper.

o2 sensor is a year old. I will try cleaning the MAF. What is a good cleaner to use

I have used brake cleaner and fuel injection intake cleaner.
Brake cleaner I sprayed into a plastic bag then swished the sensor around in it. The fuel injection cleaner I just sprayed on there.
I would recommend the fuel injection intake cleaner, though, because it won't leave any kind of film or residue.

Adding a lighted crank pully got me +1 to +2mpg...
Also, since you're in BC lighten you car by deleting all the air conditioning hardware - free up the engine with one less belt...

I was thinking of doing that. Im in the lower main land area so it never really get THAT hot. BUT if say i was still in Kelowna (Center BC) U NEED your A/C to live some days
I cleaned my MAF today with some MAF cleaner. Cool stuff. I was looking at the two small parts in side the shaft in the pipe. At first they were BLACK and ruff. After cleaning they were clear and easy to see. Their is not a major notice in how the car drives but i do find that it gets up to 60km easyer with light gas. (befor i found the car to be slugish in the 0-60 range)

It seems to me that my car is very touchy on the mileage issue when it comes to the outside air temp. I did a snork job on mine along with a k@n panel and an underdrive pulley. I log every tank full on my car and things were starting to look better. I did plugs and put on my street tires and things were looking up nicely. It was also getting warmer all that time. This last cold spell brought my mileage back down to 24.5 versus 26.5 when it was warm. So now it will be hard to tell what improvement has been made until next winter when I can compare this years cold weather mileage with next years to see if the mods I did resulted in anything. I do think there has been an improvement, though it is just harder to verify.

man your car is fine
I dream of having 24-26mpg FRICK im getting 17. This is not the thred for you lol.

Oh I know my car is doing fine, I was just saying that cold weather has a profound effect on the mileage that these cars get. Much more noticeable than other cars I have had.

A commonly overlooked part seems to be the PCV valve. It's a couple bucks and only takes a couple of minutes to change. I was getting horrendous gas mileage at barely over 200 miles for ~14 gallons (I would figure out the actual mileage, but this figure approx. what it boils down to).
I replaced many things and it would stay the same. Then magically I started getting over 300 miles for ~14 gallons. I remember the first time it happened, I was so excited

. The only thing I hadn't done before was the PCV valve. Now my mileage is merely based on my right foot. I can get anywhere from 5 mpg at a road course to around 24 mpg on the highway.
So go change that PCV valve! Other things I have done: K&N air filter, new NGK plugs & wires, Sea Foam through the intake manifold & gas, 3k mile semi-synth oil changes, snorkus delete, new fuel filter. And winter gas will always drop your gas mileage, different formulation.

One word. Coasting. If you have a manual just take it out of gear in spots where there is a slight downhill slope. I coast for about 40% of my morning commute into town hahaha

Has anyone tried keying their spark plugs? I read about it here:
http://www.carbibles.com/fuel_engine_bi ... #200608082
You can get more efficient combustion if you do it right, I'm just not sure facing the plug which way would be ideal for our cars. At first I thought it was obvious to have the electrode gap facing upward, but now I think sideways would be best because the ground electrode would be less likely to catch escaping gases a bit and dirty more quickly...
I also track my gas mileage meticulously. I have a huge Excel spreadsheet with automatic calculations for everything, especially figures that are useless and don't make much sense. It's great! I've upload it if anyone want to use it.
Here's a picture of it:
http://home.comcast.net/~subrosa135/car ... eet001.jpg
And here's the Excel spreadsheet itself:
http://home.comcast.net/~subrosa135/car/gas_mileage.xls
I hope someone finds it useful.

we are talking about turbo cars.
mine gets around 17 in town. but i have a lead foot. i dont speed but i do achieve the speed limit quickly. i can get in the low 20s on the highway.
i need to change the plugs soon. and my car does need its purge canister solenoid changed.
does the trubo have to be pulled to get that out of there?
