I lost a brake pad

Dont ask me how it happened, I still need to see if I can find the pad. I was leaving work yesterday, coming to a stop to turn onto the road, and the pedal traveled a little further than normal, and suddenly the brakes grabbed. I didnt give it much thought since its a sassy car. 20 miles later down the highway, I start to slow down and I hear a howling sound. After getting off the highway, when Id apply the brakes I would hear a howling/grinding sound. I stop to look and the rear brakes since thats where it sounded it was coming from. I saw the driver side wasnt wearing 100% even, but that shouldnt make the noises. I go over to the passenger side to check out the rotor, and it looked like the pad was barely making contact. Then it hit me, THERE WAS NO PAD. I think the inside pad is still there, but what the heck happened to the outside pad?!

It may have broken in two at some point and wiggled its way out.

Weird.

I lost both rear pads on the drivers side once. The pad material on the NAPA Premiums had disentegrated. Metal on metal, and I came to a stop at the top of my neighborhood, and the pads just slipped right out of the caliper.

All the other rear pads look fine, so I dont know why just that one pad would have failed. Today I picked up a rebuild kit and some new pads, so thats my project for Saturday.
