Determining engine year

My wagon is a 94 but the engine was replaced by the original owner. The owner I bought it from didn't know anything other than that. I have an error code of 49 which is caused by the engine being a different year than the ECU (if I'm not mistaken). Is there a way to determine what year the engine is?

You are mistaken, 49 is improper air flow meter...
But a key I know about, 91 turbos had an oil cooler, 92-94s didnt

I don't have a turbo, just an NA. Are the airflow meters the same from the different years?

afaik NA engines are the same until like 96 or something

I seem to recall very early N/A 5-speeds using the Turbo MAF also.

So I should probably just try putting the air flow meter from my 92 into my 94 and see if that works.

I was looking through my chilton's manual and it says that the MAF and airflow meter are the same thing...they have the MAF under emissions and the air meter under fuel system...
Where is the airflow meter located and what is the difference between it and the MAF?

The 90-91 n/a MT legacies and all turbo legacies use the aluminum hitachi MAF sensor.
All the rest use the black plastic JECS MAF sensor.
The MAF sensor is located right after the airbox.

What Josh said...
Also, if you look at the date on the bottom side of the oil filler cap it will be within 60 days of the actual manufacture date of your engine. Of course, if that oil filler from the original engine was reused or if the cap was ever replaced, it will be wrong.
Regardless,
your issue is a MAF issue...

My 1991 L AT has a JECS sensor. The Hitachi makes my computer throw a 49 - and my car was built in Nov. of 1990.

Checked under the oil filler cap but there was no date. Probably worn off over the years.
I have tried 3 different JECS MAF from 92-94 and all throw the 49. The 92 sensor was off my MT.
I'm wondering if I don't have an ECU issue because I have some other electrical problems:

Sorry, I left out the MT part. I went and edited my post.

There aren't 2 little circles with numbers and arrows on the underside of the cap? I have never seen them "rub off", though replacement caps don't have a date on them...

I noticed the circles but no numbers. It's probably a replacement cap, it is yellow.

I was just thinking, is the correct MAF dependent on the year of the engine or the ECU?

ECU. The engine couldn't care less...

I used the B10 scan tool (don't have a laptop so I hauled an old tower and CRT monitor into the passenger side and ran an extension cord but hey it worked) and got that working. The tool says that my ECU is from a 90-91 MT N/A which would explain the code 49. I should probably get a replacement ECU from a newer N/A because I don't want to buy another MAF...
