My friend has a plastic welder and does a great job welding plastic, however, I need a matching type of plastic to salvage pieces to custom shape my scoop...

And since plastic only welds to similar plastics, I was hoping someone knew. Usually parts are marked... "PP" "HDPE" etc...


What type of plastic is the scoop made of?

So far, I'm pretty sure It's not...

ABS
PVC
PP
Nylon *though nylon almost welds to it.*


Any help would be appreciated! If I cant figure out what type of plastic it is, it's going to be a fiberglass scoop for me.

Very likely ABS since most companies use it for molding because of it's low cost & durability.

Nope, ABS would weld to it.. so that's not it.. Thanks though

does anyone have their hood scoop off of their car? they could look for the stamping from the die...

i just went and looked at mine and couldnt see it... but its still on the car

Most likely it is polyurethane.

Might I suggest Loctite 401 instant adhesive and 770 primer?

According to the Loctite design guide for bonding plastics it will create a bond stronger than the material.


The local Loctite salesman was here this morning and learned us all on glue.

Yep, had an extra one I picked up cheap chillin' out in the garage...

...NO marking or writing on it what so ever! Not even the slightest bit of a part number either. Odd huh???

So we've a 91' *my year* and a 92' that have scoops without plastic type markings... wierd...


I'll look into the Polyurethane and TPO. (Thermo Plastic Olefin) Hmm, no wonder they call it TPO. Although the TPO seems to be more of a laminate elastomer

My buddy at who owns the body shop says that with the proper matching welding rod, he can fix almost any plastic... He did mention however that there's one type of poly that's not repairable...

Actually, the loctite would be fine, but I'm having him build a scoop from the base of my OEM style.. So OEM bolt on and nice air induction... Without going all STI-huge..

If we can find out the type of plastic, I'll have him trey these two and see if things weld.. Good thing about plastic, is ONLY IF the plastics are matching will they weld... And once the type is found, as long as it's not that one non-weldable poly, which I dont think so, the scoops a bit too rigid for that, he'll order a sheet of the plastic stock, to make more scoops.. So this may result in a fairly inexpensive upgrade for us!

Otherwise, I'd have him do a carbon fiber scoop, a bit like the STI, but half as tall... Which is the basic design style I want him to make with mine to assist the TMIC, so good cooling without the extra turbulence.

Hmm, but a cold weld STRONGER than the original material.. I'm familiar with loctite... I may just give it a whirl... in case the hotweld doesn't come through..

If it is a TPV (TPO) of some sort, then the primer/adhesive I listed will work on that as well.

I'd be interested in a scoop if it comes out ok. My WRX TMIC needs more cool air.
